What to Expect

Arguably the most renowned wines on earth, the classed growths of Bordeaux continue to epitomize the power and complexity Bordeaux blends are capable of. While most wines here are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, both Merlot and Cabernet Franc play important roles in adding layered complexity to the finished wines, and allow winemakers in each commune within the region to use the blend that is best suited to their unique combination of soil and meso-climate. The most famous communes each have their own classic traits with St. Estephe giving full, if rustic wines, from the heavy clay soils, to Paulliac's elegant balance of ripe fruits, minerality and structure to St. Julien's rich blackberry core and supple feel. Moving to the South of the region brings one to Margaux, with its notes of flowers and berries draped over a feminine frame, and then to the Graves region with wines redolent of tobacco, gravel and smoke. To the East lies the famous appellations of St. Emillion, with its wonderfully ripe Cabernet Franc, and Pomerol where Merlot rules the roost and produces deep, plush wines of uncommon refinement.

Reviews

Shows blackberry, coffee, cedar, and raisin on the nose, turning to licorice and fresh flowers. Full-bodied, with refined, silky tannins and a long finish. Balanced and juicy. Builds on the palate, with currant, licorice and mineral character, follow... Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2005 Forts de Latour, Les 3000ml

Jancis
Robinson

Rating: 17/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Complete, spicy complex nose. Fresh attack with some floral notes on the nose. Quite sumptuous but lacks a little freshness in the middle. Lots of tannin, acidity and fruit. Very very dense. Once this loses its strongly tannic currant character it may become even more satisfying. Very, very fine tannins - dry but not drying finish. Full and broad compared with Latour itself. About eight hectares of mature Cabernet Sauvignon vines have been added to Latour's holdings since early 2005 and have mostly gone into Les Forts.

Les Forts de Latour is produced from three plots situated outside the "Grand Enclos" and from vines less than 12 years old. Also, on the quality of the vintage, certain vats of Chateau Latour may be assigned to Les Forts de Latour if they are not up to the standards of the Grand Vin. The varieties are 70% Cabernet, 30% Merlot. The exact proportion of grape varieties will vary slightly from year to year. Robert Parker 92, Wine Spectator 94.

RP: The 2005 Forts de Latour (10,000 cases produced) possesses much of the same character as Latour, but sweeter tannins, more obvious and forward fruit, medium to full body, and a more seductive, plusher style, but not the great stature, richness, and architectural precision of its bigger brother. Nevertheless, it is a gorgeous Pauillac that should drink well for two decades or more.
