Les Courlandes Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2016

Member Review by duncan 906:

I got given this bottle of wine by a work colleague.Chateauneuf-du-Pape was one ofthe first appellations set up when that system was set up in the early 1930's. It is for red and white wines [though 95% are red] from four communes around the village of that name in the Avignon/Orange area of the southern Rhone valley where it is the most prestigious appellation.Chateauneuf-du-Pape roughly translates as 'the Pope's new palace' because in the 14th century Pope John 22nd built himself a new home ;now derelict but a tourist attraction, and also took a great interest in the viticulture of the area.My bottle is from the negociant house of Leon Perdigal and consists of 60% grenache and the rest syrah, mourverde and cinsault.I started my bottle last night with my supper of roast chicken.Initially it was a little tannic but after the bottle had been open for an hour things smoothed out. There is some cherry and menthol style fruit. It is not as reseved and structured as some of the better southern Rhone wines but rather a little rustic, rough and ready. However,it was an OK wine that went well with the chicken.

Perdigal:
Leon Perdigal is a negociant house from the southern Rhone valley named in honour of a 19th century cellarmaster  at the house of Ogier. They are responsible for a lot of own-label supermarket wines
