External Reviews for Les Cailloux Chateauneuf du Pape
The 2005 Les Cailloux Chateauneuf du Pape is a ripe, heady wine, dense ruby-colored, with plenty of garrigue, pepper, and kirsch notes intermixed with plenty of earthy undertones and underbrush. The wine is tannic, medium to full-bodied, and will probably benefit from 1ndash;3 years of bottle age and keep for 12ndash;15 years.
Reminiscent of his fabulous 1990, the deep, saturated ruby-hued, full-bodied, fragrant, flamboyant 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts loads of kirsch liqueur, black cherries, plums, figs, currants, and spice box as well as broad, expansive, spicy flavors. An expressive, silky, full-throttle finish possesses copious amounts of glycerin, alcohol, and fruit. Low acidity, huge flesh, and an up-front personality suggest drinking this 2003 upon release, and over the following 12ndash;14 years.
The 2000 Chacirc;teauneuf du Pape is pure sex in a bottle. A fragrant bouquet offers up aromas of spice box, cedar, pepper, jammy cherries, and a hint of plums and prunes. Dense, full-bodied, and evolved, but gorgeously succulent, this is a seamless, voluptuous Chacirc;teauneuf du Pape. Its fragrance, tactile mouthfeel, and explosive finish make for a sumptuous Chacirc;teauneuf du Pape to drink now and over the next 10ndash;12 years.
Deep, bright red. Pungent, highly complex bouquet evokes cherry-cola, blood orange, fresh flowers and minerals; smells like a Burgundy, and an awfully good one at that. Supple red berry preserve flavors are enlivened by juicy minerality and pick up a wild, smoked meat quality on the finish. Very impressive cuvee classique.
The regular cuveacute;e exhibits a deep ruby color, as well as an impressive, wild cherry/raspberry, sweet, spicy, fragrant-scent nose. Gorgeously fruity, forward and succulent, this is a luscious, hedonistic, sexy Chacirc;teauneuf-du-Pape with plenty of alcohol in the lusty finish. Drink it over the next 6ndash;7 years.
Andre Brunel is one of Chacirc;teauneuf-du-Papersquo;s most energetic, competent and talented proprietors. This wine shows a dark ruby/purple color, a super nose of pure raspberry fruit, licorice, herbs, and spice, explosive richness, superb ripeness, an opulent, chewy texture and a long, full-bodied, intense finish with that wonderfully sweet jamminess that characterizes top notch Chacirc;teauneuf-du-Pape. From 50 to 107 year old vines at ldquo;Les Cailloux, rdquo; the soft old stones of an ancient riverbed.
The beautiful dark ruby/ purple colored 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits velvety tannins, a splendid opulence, broad, full-bodied flavors, superb purity, and the vintage's tell-tale freshness and vibrancy. Les Cailloux's traditional cuvee of Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 12% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault, aged in both tank and small barrels. It is a big wine (much in the style of the 1990), but the freshness of the fruit and aromatic complexity are more reminiscent of a vintage such as 2001. This 2007 should drink beautifully for 12-15 years. The brilliant Andre Brunel, and before him, his father, have done conscientious work in Chateauneuf du Pape for many years. Shrewd consumers have long flocked to Andre Brunel's Cotes du Rhones as they are loaded with personality and quality. Moreover, they sell for a fraction of the price of his Chateauneuf du Papes.
