Les Brulières de Beychevelle Red Bordeaux Blend Haut-Médoc 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

For so long I have considered Beychevelle to be a tried and tested, does what it says on the tin, kind of a Claret. Maybe even, good but a touchboring! Over the last few years this couldn't be further from the truth and the2007 is undoubtedly one of the wines of the commune. A quintessential St Julienthat offers a fantastic crunchy freshness to the fruit that is socharacteristic of the vintage. This wine represents great value, and now I canhonestly say Beychevelle is an exciting wine to look out for! (Adam Bilbey - Berrys' Cellar Plan Team - Sept 08)

Château Beychevelle is a historic estate and Grand Cru Classé wine in Saint Julien, Bordeaux that dates back to the 15th century. During the reign of Henri III of France, the estate was the home of Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the Duke of Epernon, who was so powerful that ships who passed before his Château had to lower their sails. Hence the proprietary motif of the ship with the “basse-voile” (lowered sail) and the griffin, who according to legend would guard the cellar of wine god Dionysius. Wines have been produced here since the 17th century. It was classified as a “fourth growth” (Quatrième Cru) in the 1855 Classification. It has passed through the hands of many owners since its begninnings, and is now part of the Grande Millésimes de France. The vineyards are planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 25 years. The Grand Vin of the estate is Château Beychevelle, and their second wine, Admiral de Beychevelle. Read less

Tight,a bit oaky, sweet wood, earthy brown spice – moderately rich, nice density, ripe tannins, nice balance, a touch dry, savory backend peeks out under ripe full fruit that drives the long finish, (89-90)

Dark color of good intensity. Fruity and fresh nose of average aromatic intensity. Rounded and fruity on the palate the wine appears pleasant and of medium body. Fine tannins. Medium length. Jean-Marc Quarin - www.quarin.com
