Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Rosso Maiana 2013

Member Review by vin0vin0:

A somewhat different Italian red blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. It starts out a little thin and metallic with a hint of licorice. There's a good bit of earthiness on the mid-palate along with dried black plums and raisin.

It is exactly here, on the very spot where today’s cellar stands, that in 1665 Duke Oronzo, Earl of Lemos, gave birth to the company. He got enchanted by this landscape and decided to sell all his properties in Spain in order to draw the best from the Salentine rich terroir. He began to plant new vines, olive trees and wheat along 5 thousand hectares‘ properties, not only in Salice, but also in Guagnano, Veglie, Villa Baldassarri, Novoli and San Pancrazio. Read less

Wine Description: Salice Salentino is one of the earliest established appellations in Italy, dating back to 1939. Made from a blend of 90% Negroamaro, a dark-skinned grape known for its tannic structure, and 10% Malvasia Nera. The grapes from these mature vines are hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel and left to refine in large oak casks for six months before bottling. Tasting Notes: This wine is ruby-red in color with expressive notes of ripe plum mingled with black berry jam and sweet spice. On the palate, Maiana is full-bodied and robust. Food Pairing: A wonderful partner to roast game, beef, or hearty casseroles. - Winery Alcohol: 13.4 % pH level: 3.6 Residual sugar: 4.3 g/ L Acidity: 5.4 g/ L

Maiana is a Negroamaro-based wine (with 10% Malvasia Nera) that shows extremely ripe fruit, with tones of blackberry jam and maraschino. The finish is smooth and soft. - M.L.
