Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Rosso Maiana 2011

Member Review by vin0vin0:

A somewhat different Italian red blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. It starts out a little thin and metallic with a hint of licorice. There's a good bit of earthiness on the mid-palate along with dried black plums and raisin.

It is exactly here, on the very spot where today’s cellar stands, that in 1665 Duke Oronzo, Earl of Lemos, gave birth to the company. He got enchanted by this landscape and decided to sell all his properties in Spain in order to draw the best from the Salentine rich terroir. He began to plant new vines, olive trees and wheat along 5 thousand hectares‘ properties, not only in Salice, but also in Guagnano, Veglie, Villa Baldassarri, Novoli and San Pancrazio. Read less

Maiana is a Negroamaro-based wine (with 10% Malvasia Nera) that shows extremely ripe fruit, with tones of blackberry jam and maraschino. The finish is smooth and soft. - M.L.

Lighter in concentration and easy-drinking overall, this Salice Salentino (mostly Negroamaro) from southern Italy offers aromas of ripe fruit, prunes, strawberry and black cherry. It has a slightly sweet taste in the mouth and is loaded with mature fruit flavors. M.L. ** Only 2 in Stock **
