L'Ecole No.41 Semillon 2015

External Review:

Moving away from the Bordeaux varieties, the 2010 Syrah Columbia Valley, which incorporates 20% Grenache, is a soft, plump and friendly Syrah that has excellent purity, solid aromatics (blackberry, raspberry, underbrush) and a short finish. It-s well made and should be consumed over the coming 3–4 years. Drink now–2016.

Very buttery with an ok aroma, but a bad taste. Could be just my bottle, but this a rotten past due flavor.

Gleaming golden color. Aromas of toasted bread, pear, and butterscotch. Butterscotch, vanilla, and pear flavors. Round and rich, with good mouthfeel. Have had with a variety of dishes, but best with smoked turkey and macaroni/cheese.

Grippy tannins give way to fleshy plum and currant fruit, shaded with hints of fennel and peach fuzz, lingering well. Best after 2014.

There are almost 3,000 cases of the 2002 Semillon Barrel Fermented (it contains 12% Sauvignon Blanc), an excellent value. Loads of spices, melon and honeyed minerals are found in its boisterous aromatics. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied effort bursts forth with lush, rich layers of peach, apricot, tropical fruits, pastry cream and a myriad of spices. This velvety-textured, extroverted, friendly, smile inducing wine is complex, seamless and crammed with flavor. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

L'Ecole's other two Semillons are 100%, but this budget bottling smartly blends in just the right amount (13%) of Sauvignon Blanc, filling in the tart kiwi-flavored fruit and light herbs with hints of creamy, spicy oak.

A family-owned winery (the proprietors are Martin and Megan Clubb), l'Ecole No. 41 produces 30,000 cases of wine annually. There are 4,000 cases of the 2004 Semillon Barrel Fermented, an excellent value. It sports aromas as well as flavors of spices, honey, and pears. Medium-bodied and expressive, this well-balanced effort is silky-textured, spicy, and fruity. Drink it over the next 1 to 2 years.

The 2008 Apogee Pepper Bridge Vineyard is made up of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 8% Malbec, and 3% Cabernet Franc aged for 22 months in 50% new French oak. Balsam wood, graphite, cinnamon, clove, espresso, violets, black currant, and blackberry aromas inform the nose of a structured, savory, incipiently complex blend that will benefit from another 3–4 years of cellaring. This balanced, lengthy effort offers a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2028.

A bit tough in texture, but the pure blueberry and currant fruit comes through clearly, driving through a layer of chewy tannins to persist nicely on the meaty finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2014 through 2018.
