Polished, vibrant and distinctive for the guava accents around a supple core of cherry and spice, all of it lingering as the finish revs up. Shows some cedar notes as well. This one has pizzazz. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2012 through 2020.

L'Ecole's other Bordeaux blend features Pepper Bridge fruit, divided almost equally between Merlot (45%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (47%), with Cab Franc and Malbec filling out the rest. All the right pieces are in place - scents and flavors of light cherry, pretty chocolate, hints of dill and herb, and a sprinkle of coffee. But it's still jagged and unresolved; give it another year.

Lithe, restrained style downplays the up-front display of fruit and oak in favor of length and impressive refinement as the finish lingers on and on. It has red berry and dusky spice notes that morph into sweet leather, licorice and coffee character in the end. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2007 through 2015.

Firm, ripe and distinctive for its earthy, tobacco-scented cherry and currant flavors, echoing the fruit and spice beautifully on the long, chewy finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2004 through 2010.

The fruit for the 2007 Apogee Pepper Bridge Vineyard matured 2 weeks later than the Seven Hills fruit. It is an almost identical blend with the exception of 6% Malbec and 4% Cabernet Franc and was aged in 50% new oak. Aromas of toasty oak, tobacco, leather, Asian spices, black currant, and black cherry leads to a more structured offering that will require 4ndash;6 years of cellaring. Well-balanced, intense, and mouth-filling, it will amply reward those with patience.
