External Reviews for Leabrook Estate Pinot Gris Adelaide Hills
Leabrook Estate is a family-owned boutique winery located in the cool climate Adelaide Hills at Balhannah in South Australia. From an engineering background and having made wine for 30 years, Colin Best is the winemaker and grapegrower. His wife, Chris, manages the marketing and sales for the company. Colin's wine making philosophy places emphasis on low yields, good pH, plenty of light, and optimum picking. Vineyards are closely planted vines heavily pruned with minimal irrigation and only top quality French and some American oak barrels are used. Boutique winemaking has a number of inherent advantages, mainly to do with quality control associated with small quantities. Every barrel can be hand nurtured during the year and crafted into a style based on the same fruit source each year. Techniques can be fine tuned, both in winemaking and possibly more importantly in the vineyard, where the vines balance can be determined to give the best quality fruit for the particular site. Leabrook Estate specialises in high quality Pinot Noir and in a comprehensive range of regional white wines, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay for which the Adelaide Hills is becoming acclaimed, together with a range of cool climate red variety wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Vintage: 2009 Grapes: 100% Pinot Gris Region: Adelaide Hills, Australia. Winemaking: The juice is left to settle naturally and fermentation starts after 1 day on the lees. The fermentation takes place at a very cool temperature of maximum 13 degrees. A small percentage of barrel fermented wine is added to the final blend. The wine is cold stabilized and fined using bentonite. Suitable for vegan and vegetarian. Tasting Notes: Pale straw in colour. Nose consists of apples, pears, guava, citrus blossom, and hints of honeysuckle. The palate has great texture with much of the pear, guava, citrus, honeydew and honeysuckle characters following again with hints of flintiness, and balanced with refreshing acidity. 12.5%alc
