The 1996 is a particularly successful example of this robust, fleshy, dry red wine. The color is dark ruby, and the wine offers up copious quantities of sweet jammy cherry and berry fruit. Mouthfilling, rich, and expansive, with good flesh, and a touch of wood, this uncomplicated, but immensely satisfying red wine can be drunk now, an over the next 3-4 years. This excellent value from the winery responsible for Ornellaia is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in small oak casks and bottled unfiltered.
The estate's 2004 Le Volte, the entry-level wine, is a fresh, vinous effort with pretty aromatics, sweet ripe red fruit and herb flavors and an accessible personality. It is best enjoyed over the next three or four years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2010.
From the notable super Tuscan estate Ornellaia, this Sangiovese blend flaunts its pedigree with pristine fruit and skilled winemaking. Simultaneously savory and ripe, with red cherry, sweet shiitake and plum flavors amplified on the palate. The superb balance and purity of texture, along with fine tannins on the finish, add to the wine's fully satisfying impression.
The 2006 Le Volte is especially generous in this vintage. This plump, juicy wine bursts from the glass with an array of super-ripe dark plums, cherries, smoke and licorice. It is an engaging, rewarding wine to enjoy over the next few years. Le Volte is made from Sangiovese which is purchased from outside producers plus Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the property. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011.
