Notwithstanding some complaints by friends about the scent of this wine, I find the nose quite enticing: the soft red fruit has camperis mushroom and bacon fat in the background plus some barnyard straw. On entry more mushroom and acidic wild red fruit (like pincherry); there is a slight acerbity on the finish common with Grenache (in my experience). A fine CdP for the price. Keep for 2-3 years or drink now. 90 points.
The nose opened over time to show blackberry, dark currant, crisp bacon, ginger spice, herbes de Provence and a hint of citrus. On the palate it was full bodied with dark fruit tones hinting at blueberry and plum, along with dark earth, minerals and fig, which last through the finish, coating the palate with intense fruit extract and a hint of tannin. This wine continued to open up over the three hours it was in decanter. It's was still showing youthful tannin but there's so much intense fruit that I can imagine it will only get better. At this time, it's highly enjoyable but would benefit from a few more years in the cellar. (93 points)

Still backward and unevolved, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape (75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% other authorized varietals) was aged completely in foudre. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a reticent, but burgeoning bouquet of black cherries, plums, black currants, garrigue, lavender, and licorice. One can sense the weight, power, and richness in the mouth, but the tannins are there, and the wine also has very good acids. Consequently, patience will be required, and this is one 2007 where 2-3 years of bottle age is warranted. The wine is capable of lasting 15-20+ years. This pure, deep, full-bodied 2007 is the finest Chateauneuf du Pape Vieux Donjon has made since their sensational 1998 and 1990.
Super-rich and full-bodied, with an exotic, over-ripe quality, this large-scale wine was obviously made from extremely ripe fruit and low yieldshellip; a potential blockbuster for the vintage.
The three component parts of the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, Syrah from the estatersquo;s holdings in Pialons, old vine Grenache from sandy terroirs, and Mourvedre, are all brilliant, hence the estimated rating of (94ndash;96). The wine reveals a dense purple color along with a gorgeous bouquet of camphor, licorice, graphite, sweet red and black fruits, smoked meats. and a hint of charcoal. Full-bodied and pure with plenty of Provencal garrigue and meaty characters, this superb, chewy red should turn out to be their first effort since the 1998 and 1990. It is a classic, traditionally made Chateauneuf du Pape to drink between 2013ndash;2026.
Glass-staining ruby. Highly expressive, exotically perfumed bouquet of black raspberry, potpourri, smoky minerals and anise. A smooth, silky midweight with flavors of sweet red and dark berries complicated by notes of candied flowers and zesty minerals. Really clings on the finish, with the red fruit flavors refusing to let up.
This is rock-solid, with crushed raspberry, kirsch, juniper and smoked apple wood notes, backed by a broad, plush, spice- and anise-filled finish. Nicely rounded and integrated for the vintage. Drink now through 2021.
Ruby-red. Intensely perfumed aromas of Asian spices, garrigue, red berries, smoke and minerals. This elegant wine calls to mind pinot noir in its weight and texture. Sweet, palate-staining raspberry and cherry flavors are enlivened by juicy acidity. Very pure and seductive wine with no gamey qualities and a long, sweet finish.
Deep red. Fresh red berries, flowers and spicecake on the nose, with a hint of white pepper adding energy. Juicy, finely etched strawberry and raspberry flavors show a pinot-like character and are framed by silky tannins. The lively finish features a lingering note of candied flowers. This graceful, understated wine should be delicious on release.
