An absolutely profound offering, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige requires 5–6 years of cellaring given its massive concentration and tannic structure. The wine was relatively closed the day I tasted it, but it did display an inky/purple color along with hints of camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice and espresso beans. Full-bodied and moderately tannic with gorgeous freshness, glycerin and a skyscraper-like texture, this superb cuvee should be at its finest between 2018–2030+.
This has power and guile, with dense layers of blackberry, Black Mission fig and black currant fruit lined with substantial but velvety tannins. The long, spice- and black tea-infused finish has a good bass line in the background. Best from 2017 through 2030.
Once again the Sabons have hit a home run with their 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige. Opaque purple-hued with a full-bodied mouthfeel, massive concentration, abundant tannin and good acidity, it will not be as drinkable early on as the 2009 Prestige. The 2010 possesses some of the structural characteristics of the 2005, and thus requires 5-6 years of patience. It should keep for an atypically long time for a Chateauneuf du Pape — 25–30 years. It is a brilliant, majestic, massive Chateauneuf du Pape from the Sabons.
Very tight, with notes of blackberry, raspberry, cherry and currant preserves all coiled at the core, framed by details of black tea, bergamot and anise. The finish picks up a sleek iron note to accompany the perfumy edge. Very long despite the backwards profile. Should be a stunner with age. Best from 2017 through 2035.
Even more backward and tasting like dry vintage port is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon. This beauty has extraordinary intensity as well as a nose of smoked meats, tobacco leaf, kirsch, graphite, ink and something that seems to be in many of the great vintages of Le Secret des Sabon, the smell of lacquered Peking duck. Massive and full-bodied, it needs 8andndash;10 years of cellaring and should last for 40 years or more. Assuming you can find any of the 150andndash;300 cases produced, it should only be purchased by patient connoisseurs who can wait for its magic to unfold. Kudos to the Sabon family for producing wines of consistently brilliant quality.
If you can find any of the 150 or so cases made, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon represents the essence of Chateauneuf du Pape, perhaps the essence of wine. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as a fabulous, intricate nose of blue, black and red fruits, graphite, chocolate, charcoal, forest floor, spring flowers and a touch of garrigue. Unbelievably concentrated, to the point of being viscous and nearly over the top, the wine is sensationally rich and pure with a nearly endless finish. There is plenty of tannin, but it is largely obscured by the luxuriousness of the wineandrsquo;s high glycerin and intense fruit. Forget this beauty for 3andndash;5 years and drink it over the following three decades or more. This is a magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape although it is impossible to say it is better than some of the previous blockbusters made at Domaine Roger Sabon, including the 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007 Secret des Sabon.
