Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino 2013

Member Review by Bob Fyke:

Rich Earth and aromatic red cherry skins with underlying minerality and notes of dried herbs (thyme?). Later green tobacco and sandalwood appear on the nose. The palate is delicious being somehow rich and lean at the same time.Spiced red cherry leads the way with nice freshness and juicy acidity. The finish is long and finely textured. Satisfying, and complete. 91 Pts

Loaded with licorice and sweet cherry notes, this red is supple and juicy. Takes on a saline, savory character, lingering on the minerally finish. Shows fine harmony overall. Best from 2015 through 2025.

Riccardo Campinoti’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a unique wine in that it offers lower fruit personality and a much higher degree of floral intensity. You get pressed rose petal and violets with earthy garden tones and even a bright note of chopped mint. The wines are fermented in cement and then moved to oak casks for 36 months. Also of special note is the silky and refined nature of the tannin. Drink: 2017–2023.

The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is impeccable. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red cherries and tobacco all take shape in the glass. A wine of superb detail and nuance, the 2008 impresses for its balance and sheer personality. This mid-weight, utterly gracious wine is a terrific effort from high-toned savory notes resonating on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015–2023.

A blend from estate vineyards in three areas of Brunello, this is closed off, a contrast of bright and dark scents, like strawberries and tar. It feels clean, juicy and soft until the wine begins to lengthen its stride with two days of air, the flavors brightening, the tannins glistening the way sheared, mica-tinged rock reflects light.

Starts out softly, gaining structure as the balsamic, plum, tobacco and underbrush notes develop. More focused on savory elements than fruit, with dense tannins rearing up on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2032.

The boutique Le Ragnaie winery sits among the highest elevation vineyards in the Montalcino, 1800 feet above sea level. Their property consists of 42 acres of vineyards in three different zones and microclimates; Le Ragnaie and Pietroso (both in Montalcino itself), along with a plot in Castelnuovo dell-Abate. The wines are made as naturally as possible. The grapes are fermented in cement without the addition of yeast and left on their skins for nearly three weeks. From here the juice is gravity fed into 25-hectoliter Slavonian casks where they gently rest for 3 years. The wines are then racked, blended, bottled and aged for an additional year. The winery was certified biodynamic in 2009. Production very small, particularly in comparison to the many large wineries in Montalcino. Total production is only 1000 cases overseen by winemaker Riccardo Campinoti who is concidered one of the most promising young producers in the region. In the spectacular 2010 vintage he's produced a superb Brunello. Antonio Galloni scored it 95 saying "The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. A super-classic profile of sweet red cherries, smoke, tobacco, cedar and wild herbs lift from the glass in a perfumed, silky Brunello that captures the essence of Sangiovese in this cool, late-ripening vintage. The 2010 is delicious today, but it can also be cellared for another 15-20 years. Le Ragnaie's 2010 will appeal to readers with an appreciation for Red Burgundy or Nebbiolo. The 2010 is a blend of fruit from three sources. About 50% of the fruit came from the Ragnaie property, while the rest of the fruit was sourced from vineyards in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, a combination that yields a wonderfully complete Brunello full of intrigue." And James Suckling scored it 98 points saying "Crazy nose with chocolate, smoke, grilled meat, ripe fruits and walnuts. The palate is super and goes on for minutes with plum, berry, spice, chocolate, and nuts. Full body, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Amazing quality. Goes on for minutes. Made from biodynamically grown grapes."
