Food Pairings for Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano
This estate has now joined the ranks of Tuscan superstars. Elisabetta Geppetti has injected a great deal of dynamism into Le Pupille’s wines in the past few vintages, yet has been careful to look after the detail as well. In addition to Morellino di Scansano, Le Pupille has also been expending considerable effort in producing two of Italy’s great red wines, including the outstanding single vineyard Morellino, Poggio Valente. This wine comes from vineyards around the medieval village of Pereta, covering a total surface area of 28.5 ha. The vineyards face south-south west and are situated at 250 metres above sea level. The training system used is single Guyot. The vines are planted at a density of 3,750 plants per hectare in the older vineyards, and 6,250 plants in the more recent ones. The average yield is 42-49 hl/ha. The soil varies in composition, but is predominantly sandy, with plenty of stones and low clay content. Harvesting takes place from mid September to mid October. This Sangiovese blend shows delicious ripe fruit on the nose, with the cherry-strawberry hints characteristic of ripe Sangiovese. The Alicante adds greater depth of colour to the blend whereas the Malvasia Nera emphasises the perfume of this ripe, approachable wine.
