Le Marquis Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2011

Member Review by duncan 906:

I got given this bottle of wine at Christmas.Chateauneuf-du-Pape comes from the Avignon/Orange area of the southern Rhone valley where it is the most prestigious appellation.Chateauneuf-du-Pape roughly translates as 'the pope's new palace' because in the 14th century Pope JohnXXIII built himself a new home [now derelict but a tourist attraction] and also took a great interest in the viticulture of the region although wine had been made here since before the Romans.Even today the papal coat of arms is engraved on every bottle.Cellier des Dauphins is a brand name created in 1967 by the co-operative group UVCDR based in Tulette a Provencal village halfway between the towns of Nyons and Orange. This is a massive concern operating throughout the Rhone valley, producing 50 million bottles a year and using thousands of growers. This Chateauneuf-du-Pape consists of 60% grenache,20%syrah,10%mourverde and 10%cinsault and has spent time in oak barrels.I drank my bottle the other evening with a meal of pork chops. It is very dry although there is some concentrated blackcurrant or liquorice type fruit there but it is hiding behind some fairly strong tannins.Perhaps it could do with another couple of years bottle-age.It was an OK bottle and I enjoyed it but I have had better from the Rhone valley and this appellation. The Palais des Anciens negociant version of Chateauneuf-du-Pape is better

Cellier des Dauphins:
Cellier des Dauphins, a.k.a. Union des Vignerons des Côtes du Rhône (U.V.C.D.R.), is a cooperative of 13 wine producers in the Southern Rhone in France. It was formed to better supervise quality control for producers who until then were mostly distributed as bulk wines. The wines are produced at each of the 13 locations, then bottled and stored at the Cellier des Dauphins winery in Tulette.
