Moderately saturated ruby. Cassis, plum and milk chocolate on the nose, lifted by a floral perfume. Sweet, dense and youthfully unevolved, with classic cabernet flavors of dark berries, graphite, and a touch of cedar. Broadens out impressively on the back end and shows increasing sweetness of fruit with extended aeration. This is a very supple version of Paleo; with less of the acid backbone of other recent vintages, it boasts a softer, if simpler, appeal.

Intense aromas of blackberry, rose and rosemary follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish. Supersilky and caressing. A gorgeous wine. Cabernet Franc. Best after 2009.

Medium-deep ruby. Refined aromas of floral red berries and high-grade milk chocolate are somewhat overwhelmed by coconut and vanilla. Finely textured and lithe on the palate, with sneaky concentration to its redcurrant, raspberry, milk chocolate and mineral flavors. The long, nuanced finish features very fine tannins.

Cabernet franc seems so well adapted to the soils at Le Macchiole that its impossible to separate the land from the grape. Grown in a mix of limestone and chalk, with rocks, sand and clay, this andrsquo;05 seamlessly combines savory, ferrous tannins with fresh black- and blueberry flavors. Itandrsquo;s cool and dark when first poured, that darkness offset by high notes of fresh mint. With air it becomes full and broad, the coolness a textural component that feels like silk pulled tightly across a sheet of iron. Itandrsquo;s beautiful wine now, with abundant complexity and flawless integration. Built to cellar for at least ten to 15 years.

The 2005 Paleo (Cabernet Franc) is impressive. Wild herbs, roasted coffee beans, new leather, minerals and dark fruit emerge from this long, refined wine. Although the intensity tapers off slightly on the mid-palate, this is an absolutely gorgeous wine loaded with style and personality. Still tightly wound, it needs further bottle age to reach its peak. It is arguably the most successful of the estateandrsquo;s 2005s. Anticipated maturity: 2009andndash;2017.

Deep red-ruby. Pure, bracing aromas of violet, strawberry and red cherry are complicated by a mocha note. Silky on entry, then rich and layered in the middle, with dark cherry, coffee and graphite flavors and a chalky, minerally nuance. At once creamy and penetrating, this elegant, seamless wine showcases the very rich, slightly exotic strawberry and mineral flavors that cabernet franc can achieve here. Conveys a rare combination of energy, power and lift. A wonderfully sweet and gripping wine, with suave tannins and sound acids giving focus to the flavors. To my taste, this is one of the very best Italian wines in recent memory.
