Le Grand Cros Cotes de Provence l'Esprit de Provence Rose 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

67% Grenache, 33% Syrah - Nicely floral and fairly intense with raspberry, citron and melon notes bringing up the rear. Really floral actually. A very elegant feel, flannelly with integrated acidity and nice round fruit. There’s a nice mineral tone that drives the finish and a fairly long, lingering raspberry and lightly spice driven finish. Almost simple though if you pay attention there is a lot going on here both texturally and with the flavor profile. 88pts

Le Grand Cros is a family estate situated in the heart of AOC Côtes de Provence, the world capital of dry rosés. The Faulkner’s, a Canadian family, certainly take their rosés very seriously and indeed were one of the first estates to produce sparkling rosés made in the traditional method and are one of the pioneers of a new Provencal method. The estate also produces small quantities but highly acclaimed reds and whites. Today they are one of the most technically innovative estates in southern France from computer models for disease control (they have sustainable wine accreditation www.terravitis.com) to advanced infrared measurements for determining grape ripeness. Technology though doesn’t mean these wines are not handcrafted, indeed most the grapes are hand-picked. Loved this rose - fruit-forward, juicy and lush, yet balanced with nice acidity.

Very sweet with a round, lush, peachy body that is quite acidic.

Passion fruit and burned the nose with some mineral, very young wine

Surprisingly effervescent, a got melon and banana on the nose. This is a nicely balanced rose

Can't score these wines so far because it is difficult to buy them in So Cal. Maybe if I was lucky enough to be in Provence....
