Le Fonti Alta Valle Della Greve Fontissimo IGT 2001

External Review by Shop Wine Direct:

Wine Spectator ReviewBeautiful aromas of blackberry, mineral and violet that follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a long caressing finish. Solid and polished. Just starting to come around. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2008.Wine Tasting NotesA blend of around 65% Sangiovese and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon. We are slowly starting to integrate the Merlot into this assemblage. The color is deep purple, ruby red. The nose shows blackcurrants with a hint of vanilla, black cherry, chocolate, licorice. On the palate juicy, ripe black fruit, black cherry, currants, creamy finish.

Halfway between Florence and Siena, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, lies the small village of Panzano. Just below the village church, at 450 m above sea level, is our property, the Fattoria Le Fonti. It extends over 15 hectares (37 acres) with olive groves and 8.5 hectares (18.7 acres) of vineyards. Le Fonti has been in the hands of the Schmitt-Vitali family since 1994. Since then we have replanted all of the vineyards, taking great care in selecting the right type of plant with the correct root stock; and renovated the cellars, incorporating the latest technology to help us make better and longer lasting wines. Compared to other vineyards of the area, Le Fonti is a small, boutique style fattoria, producing about 30,000 bottles or 2500 cases a year. Our fattoria is completely family-run, employing only a couple of outside workers. From the harvest to the final blend, we depend on family manpower and taste. For expert consultation and knowledge, we rely on our consultant enologist Dr. Stefano Chioccioli. Le Fonti's small size and our dedicated family involvement allow us to take meticulous care of the vineyard, ensuring that only the best fruits reach our cellar and only the finest blends get bottled in the end.
