Although by all accounts the vine has been rampant in these parts since at least Roman times, the earliest written mention that our archivist has discovered, citing a parcel of vines being cultivated at Haut-Brion dates back to only 1423. In the early days wines were known by the name of the parishes from whence they came. Later they became known as clarets. In the case of Haut-Brion, under the great stewardship of the Pontac family the wine's reputation was for years represented by the name of this enlightened and well respected family-- Pontac wine. Eventually as its renown grew, the name of the Estate came to replace that of its owners. The notion of a Great Growth was born! We find the first written mention of the wine in the Diaries of Samuel Pepys. While visiting the Royal Oak Tavern in London on April 10, 1663 Pepys wrote "There I drank a sort of French wine called Ho-Bryan (sic) which hath a good and most particular taste which I never before encountered....." At present I would rate the 1995 La Mission slightly ahead of the 1996 only because the 1995 possesses a forward sweet complex more evolved nose. It find it impossible to resist the 1995 s density and richness. Nevertheless the 1996 is an outstanding wine. The color is a dark ruby/purple and the nose offers up roasted herbs sweet blueberry jam and cassis scents intermingled with earth and truffle-like aromas. Round rich and sweet with medium to full body outstanding depth but not the weight glycerin and overall opulence of the 1995 the 1996 should hit its peak in 7-8 years and last for 25. Full ruby-red. Initially mute nose opened slowly to reveal complex aromas of raspberry plum hot stones tobacco saddle leather and toffee. Really explodes on the palate; lush and minerally with a compelling note of woodsmoke and firm acidity. Wonderful combination of sweetness and vibrancy. Finishes very long and subtle with firm tannins. 92 points Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Old, aristocratic Bordeaux. This is difficult to consider as a young wine, entangled as it is in oak, the flavors buxom yet guarded. Compressed underneath the substantial weight there's a sophisticated, expressive Graves, a view into the stones of the soil as polished as the red fruits that form the core of flavor. Within that core, the wine holds all its freshness and power as if in reserve for the decades to come. On the outside, there's the oak, which only seems to grow more dominant with air, the fruit persisting as an undercurrant. This will need a decade of age to show itself more fully, and will likely continue to evolve for several decades more.

A pure evocation of Graves, Haut-Brion's '98 is all potential energy, a powerful layering of minerals, gravel, plum skin, grape skin, red fruit and game, all compressed within unrelenting tannins. You can see the intensity in the dense black-purple color, and you can taste it in the tremendous red fruit length. for all its power, it remains one of the most elegant wines of Bordeaux. There's no bow to fashion, to international style. Jean-Bernard Delmas looks deep into the vineyard to create this wine and fashions it to develop for 20 years or more.
