Lazio Poggio le Volpi Frascati Superiore DOC

Winemaker's Notes:

Poggio Le Volpi Estate covers 15 hectares of vineyards situated on the lower slopes of Monte Porzio Catone in the heart of the Frascati Superiore appellation. The vines are mainly south facing and are trained low. Yields are kept low. The winery, that dates back more than 100 years, is today equipped with the most modern technology. Production focuses on quality wines obtained from selected vines, tended with passion and skill by Felice Merge, owner, winemaker and vineyard Manager. Riccardo Cotarella is the consultant oenologist. Respect for history and regard for ancient tradition of hospitality, very much alive at the Estate, led to the building of a modern tasting area, and to the restoration of the old cellar dug into the tufa rocks under the old farmhouse. All commercial aspects of this boutique winery are handled by Femar Vini. Vintage: 2009 Grapes: 80% Malvasia ,10% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Bombino Bianco Soil: Potassium-rich dark volcanic soil Note: The Malvasia Bianca di Candia grapes were late harvested. Vinification: Very gentle pressing of the grapes (no skin contact). Fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then left to rest in temperature controlled tanks until bottled in April following the vintage. Colour: Pale straw yellow Serve: Chilled as an aperitif or to accompany fish, shellfish, white meats and mild cheese. Taste: An elegant wine, showing fresh pineapple combined with lemon sherbert on the palate with a velvety and long finish. Truly delicious.

The Poggio Le Volpi Estate was established in the 90s by Felice Mergè, a man of unusually keen insight.   The young oenologist is Armando Mergè's son, and is the third generation of the branch of a family whose progenitor is Mario Mergè. Mario Mergè began his work back in the 20s, concentrating mainly on viticulture and olive growing and marketing his products.   He passed his life and work experiences on to the large second generation of the family, experiences which have found vigour and reached full meaning through the bold, enterprising spirit of grandson Felice, wholly supported by the solid, active drive of his father Armando.   Poggio Le Volpi has an image which is second to none for the quality and elegance of its wines.   These wines are the precious jewels which have ennobled the estate's pedigree due to the praise and appreciation heaped upon them in the refined and exclusive niche wines segment.
