Layer Cake is a wine brand created by Jayson Woodbridge, winemaker of the cult California label Hundred Acre. The idea for the wine stemmed from nostalgic memories of Woodbridge’s childhood eating his grandmother’s cake. The story goes that his grandfather would pour a small glass of wine and explain, “The vines live in layers of soil just like the layers in Grandma’s cake; each layer bringing a different flavor.” Woodbridge saw that metaphor extending to life in general, everything with layers and complexity. Since Hundered Acre costs upwards of $350 in high demand, he decided to create an affordable wine (that was more in keeping with his grandfather’s sensibilities), with these layered elements of flavor and texture. The idea was to make an everyday wine of quality and not mass production.   The wines are sourced from around the world: Shiraz from South Australia, Malbec from Argentina, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, Syrah from the Cote du Rhone in France and Cabernet from Napa Valley in California. These wines have themselves earned a large following, though are easily accessible from many retailers.  Read less

Jammy nose laced with cola. Thick and dense mouthfeel. Stewed dark fruits. Very heavy and unbalanced. High alcohol and very overripe. Not my style at all. Like being punched in the face. - Tasted at Hostile Grape 3/10/10

I really enjoyed it this time. Perhaps that last bottle needed time or aeration. Whatever the case, I liked the dense creamy complexity of this wine. Plum, cherry blackberry and pepper. - Tasted at Total Wine & More 4/3/10

Reminded me of a fruit compote, just without the sweetness. Very smooth and easy to quaff, I think the WS tasting note hit it dead on.

Smells like caramel, pepper and acetone. It has a smooth flavor, and doesn't have the peppery bite of some shiraz.

Full bodied, very jammy, and spice on the finish.

Dark, dense and creamy, complex aromas of black plum, Bing cherry, blackberry and pepper merge with licorice, tobacco, mocha and dark chocolate. This is one inky Shiraz; an explosion of dark, super ripe, wild blackberry, with a touch of cigar box finishing with a melange of exotic spices. A pure fruit bombcomplete from attack through a long, lingering finish. Chefs will save this cake for themselves.
