Layer Cake Shiraz 2015

External Review:

Dark, dense and creamy, complex aromas of black plum, Bing cherry, blackberry and pepper merge with licorice, tobacco, mocha and dark chocolate. This is one inky Shiraz; an explosion of dark, super ripe, wild blackberry, with a touch of cigar box finishing with a mélange of exotic spices. A pure fruit bomb…complete from attack through a long, lingering finish. Chefs will save this cake for themselves… - Winery

Layer Cake is a wine brand created by Jayson Woodbridge, winemaker of the cult California label Hundred Acre. The idea for the wine stemmed from nostalgic memories of Woodbridge’s childhood eating his grandmother’s cake. The story goes that his grandfather would pour a small glass of wine and explain, “The vines live in layers of soil just like the layers in Grandma’s cake; each layer bringing a different flavor.” Woodbridge saw that metaphor extending to life in general, everything with layers and complexity. Since Hundered Acre costs upwards of $350 in high demand, he decided to create an affordable wine (that was more in keeping with his grandfather’s sensibilities), with these layered elements of flavor and texture. The idea was to make an everyday wine of quality and not mass production.   The wines are sourced from around the world: Shiraz from South Australia, Malbec from Argentina, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, Syrah from the Cote du Rhone in France and Cabernet from Napa Valley in California. These wines have themselves earned a large following, though are easily accessible from many retailers.  Read less

Well balanced shiraz. A little heavy handed...should be paired with steak. Good basic for price.

A very good wine for sipping at room temp. or chilled. Need to pair it with foods. Mixes very well with Ginger Ale, Needs to be tried with Sprite.

Jammy and delightful. Silky finish like frosting. Confused why same label comes in different varieties from Italy and elsewhere. If you like the Shiraz, you'll enjoy Desert Eagle and Maverick (both also from Barossa in Australia).

A classic Shiraz with peppery notes made all the better with the smooth tannins and full fruit richness

"Layer Cake Côtes du Rhône is 100% Syrah made from fruit sourced from all four departments of the Rhone, centered around Chateauneuf du Pape. Although each vineyard source could have produced a superlative bottle of Syrah, we found when blended, the wine was the most complete; each terroir complimenting the next.
