What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Dark, brimming with cocoa, fresh blueberry and spice; an abundance of black cherry, dried plum, freshly cut tobacco and coffee dominate the palate. Supple tannins prevail but are nicely integrated. It’s a very pure mouthful of Shiraz. Perfectly structured, zesty acidity carries the flavors over the entire palate penetrating each taste bud. The finish tends to linger for over a minute.

I just don't appreciate Shiraz the way I do some other wines. This one is full bodied and fruity, with lingering flavors of tasty sweet things like chocolate and jams. As a sipping wine it is just too much before a meal, but not necessarily during or after. I could see this being a hit in a big wide open glass beside a bowl of cream bisque of crawfish or lobster, seasoned with fresh basil and black pepper, floating croutons pan toasted in butter; grilled sausage bursting with cayenne, garlic and cumin (maybe a link of boudin); pulled pork slowly smoked in a crust of dried mustard, celery seed and sea read more...
