Layer Cake Primitivo has been one of my favorite wines to open after a hard day at work. I love the cherry and berry aroma. It is very soothing. The wine itself is very fruity, more than I usually care for. Not much on tannins either. This is strickly a wine that I will have prior to dinner, certainly not with a fatty meat. At $16 a bottle, it is a good value and a good wine to take to a party because it will have a broad range of fans.

the 2008's are shipped and drinking every bit the flesh-bucket and consequently flying off the shelves. Of the Layer Cake stable, the Primitivo simply barks in Italian and reminds of the stories told by my grandfather who made jugwine in the bath tub from Zinfandel grapes bought by the box car from California in the 1920's. Except this stuff is just a hilarious celebration of Zin fruit and a winemaker's presence of mind. Pass the carciofi, please.

For someone with little experience with wines this was the best wine I have tasted so far. There were definitely layers of flavors. From the look to the smell through to the flavor you would never guess this was a $15.00 bottle of wine.

This is too sweet and fruity for me, though I can see how some would like it. My current favorite Zin is the 2008 Mettler Family Epicenter Zin, which I find truly exceptional for its price.

Comes right at you with huge, inky black fruit, spice and white pepper, layered and rich in the mouth with jammy black cherries, truffles, espresso and dense, creamy texture. Always in the background are hints of the old seabeds that are the Puglia terroir. This is by far the most versatile wine in the Layer Cake lineup; the big power makes it work with all kinds of meats and roasts, and the soft textures and sweet ripe fruit make it one of the few red wines that works amazingly well with spicy foods.

Carole Meredith of UC Davis, the most important genetics academic in the world of wine, has confirmed than Primitivo and Zinfandel have identical DNA. The Layer Cake Primitivo label received the first-ever Certificate of Label Approval with Primitivo and Zinfandel used as synonyms on the label.

A balance of elegance and power; inky black fruit, spice and white pepper, jammy black cherries, plums, blackberry fruit, truffles, tar, and espresso. Warm and rich in the mouth with a creamy texture; the ripe fruit is well supported by the deep structure of the wine. Sit back and travel through time...Relax on a hot summer evening, the fountain in the background, church-bells in the distance. - Winery

The most rustic of these three wines, with lots of pepper, roasted herbs, meat juices, charcoal, and scorched earth, this spicy wine has an inky ruby/purple color and lots of body.

Skip dessert tonight and indulge in this sinfully decadent low-calorie alternative! Super bright on both the nose and palate, with juicy, chocolate-covered cherry flavors. Rich, with very smooth tannins; though fermented dry, the Layer Cake is loaded with so much fruit, it's almost difficult to believe that it is still so healthy for you.

The most rustic of these three wines, with lots of pepper, roasted herbs, meat juices, charcoal, and scorched earth, this spicy wine has an inky ruby/purple color and lots of body. It comes across like a rustic Zinfandel, but with loads of character and personality, displaying an almost savage intensity to its flavors. This is a wild, adventuresome wine that should drink nicely for several years. Bring on the pizza!
