Layer Cake Primativo 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Primitivo and Zinfandel are genetically identical according to UC Davis grapevine geneticist Carole Meredith. The varietal arrived in the United States in the early 1820’s and made its appearance in California around 1850. Needless to say it has become one of the favorite varietals in America. Primitivo has been cultivated in Italy and in particular Puglia for thousands of years. Puglia, the “heel” of Italy’s famous boot, is home to one of the greatest collection of ancient Primitivo/Zinfandel vines on the planet. Puglia has been invaded countless times. Despite a turbulent and varied past the people have absorbed the best of many cultures and formed a unique way of life. Somehow they seem above the hectic modern world. They sit in the square, talk of the heat and sand when storms in the Sahara rage, lashing them just 100 miles away. They speak of soccer, food and harvest time. They just seem to be part of the land, stone Trulli (unique stacked stone houses) predating the Roman Empire sit alongside stone walls enclosing one little vineyard after another. They get up and go back into the fields, they work slowly yet with purpose, working the vines as their fathers and forefathers before them. This is a magical place. We are here in Puglia to take this incredible resource and craft our Layer Cake - Primitivo. The journey in Italy is not easy but worth every step. Welcome along!!

Layer Cake is a wine brand created by Jayson Woodbridge, winemaker of the cult California label Hundred Acre. The idea for the wine stemmed from nostalgic memories of Woodbridge’s childhood eating his grandmother’s cake. The story goes that his grandfather would pour a small glass of wine and explain, “The vines live in layers of soil just like the layers in Grandma’s cake; each layer bringing a different flavor.” Woodbridge saw that metaphor extending to life in general, everything with layers and complexity. Since Hundered Acre costs upwards of $350 in high demand, he decided to create an affordable wine (that was more in keeping with his grandfather’s sensibilities), with these layered elements of flavor and texture. The idea was to make an everyday wine of quality and not mass production.   The wines are sourced from around the world: Shiraz from South Australia, Malbec from Argentina, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, Syrah from the Cote du Rhone in France and Cabernet from Napa Valley in California. These wines have themselves earned a large following, though are easily accessible from many retailers.  Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Bright ruby color -- nicely spiced licorice and almond nose. I was slightly surprised by the level of residual sugar in this wine. It's not cloying, but it has a bit of sweetness. Nice, round soft tannins ride along the bottom of the red fruit flavors. I would probably give this another year or so in the bottle. It would get a higher rating from me but it's not necessarily my favorite type of Zinfandel.

Liked it more than I thought I would. Was not as fruit forward as I was expecting, especially as the nose was very strong.

BIG RED ZIN, no mistaking it! Plum, violet, black cherry. Meaty, mellow, nutmeg, cloves, blackberry, tar, fruit-hit, but not a monster California Zin. ready to drink and quite well behaved.

I have to say, as a zinfandel LOVER I was not overly impressed with this wine. I do, however, have a million great things to say about Layer Cake's Shiraz. It is out of this world! I would definitely pick the Shiraz over the Zinfandel, which is not something I normally say!

Wine Tasting NotesThe wine is opaque and purple-colored with a nose of jammy black cherry and blackberry fruit, truffles, tar, and spice. Warm and rich in the mouth; the ripe fruit is well supported by the depth of the structure.

The fruit comes from head-trained old vines and is harvested in early September. This is truly remarkable plant material in very old vineyards; some dating to Roman times. The soils in Manduria are red iron-rich clays with large calcareous rocks, shells and coral from ancient sea beds. We’re talking ancient, gnarled baskets hugging the ground and rocks around them, ancient chariots buried underneath, lost civilization stuff. A balance of elegance and power; inky black fruit, spice and white pepper, jammy black cherries, plums, blackberry fruit, truffles, tar, and espresso. Warm and rich in the mouth with a creamy texture; the ripe fruit is well supported by the deep structure of the wine.

Hundred Acres has created this wine from the belief that wine should be a layer cake of flavors. With notes of mocha, chocolate, and dark berry fruit, grab a bottle of this rare layer cake today.
