Layer Cake Malbec 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Pure, rich and very elegant; a powerhouse of lush black fruit, silky cocoa, black spice and cream, wrapped around blackberry, cherry and ripe plum. Layered and complex with a nose to linger over, a finish that never ends. Sweet anise, hints of tobacco, black chocolate, more cherries and exotic spices, layers of jam. This wine will stand and perform anytime you think of a Cabernet and want something just a little more exotic. Born at the base of the Andes and fed by the purest spring waters…I love this wine ..."   Layer Cake is a wine brand created by Jayson Woodbridge, winemaker of the cult California label Hundred Acre. The idea for the wine stemmed from nostalgic memories of Woodbridge’s childhood eating his grandmother’s cake. The story goes that his grandfather would pour a small glass of wine and explain, “The vines live in layers of soil just like the layers in Grandma’s cake; each layer bringing a different flavor.” Woodbridge saw that metaphor extending to life in general, everything with layers and complexity. Since Hundered Acre costs upwards of $350 in high demand, he decided to create an affordable wine (that was more in keeping with his grandfather’s sensibilities), with these layered elements of flavor and texture. The idea was to make an everyday wine of quality and not mass production.   The wines are sourced from around the world: Shiraz from South Australia, Malbec from Argentina, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, Syrah from the Cote du Rhone in France and Cabernet from Napa Valley in California. These wines have themselves earned a large following, though are easily accessible from many retailers.  Read less

If I had a steak sandwich in my left hand, I would have a glass of Layer Cake Malbec in the other. This wine is simply the best.

Spicy cherry with a hint of plastic LEGOs. Full body with medium finish. Feels like I just ate some tasty berries; lip-smacking yumminess.
