Layer Cake Malbec 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Advocate Review Rated 91 Dense purple-colored with notes of blackberry, earth, roasted meats, and a hint of barbecue spice, this wine exhibits great fruit, delicious, full-bodied texture, silky tannins, and a long finish. It does taste more like a $30-50 bottle of Malbec than one that can be purchased for $15. It should drink nicely for at least 2-3 years. Wine Tasting Notes The wine has a dense, purple core with a brilliant red rim. Black fruit is abundant in the nose followed closely by anise, chocolate and very pleasant touches of spice. Soft, lush and fragrant, Layer Cake Malbec is an intense mouthful of fruit-driven wine, finishing with very soft tannins. Delicious!

Layer Cake is a wine brand created by Jayson Woodbridge, winemaker of the cult California label Hundred Acre. The idea for the wine stemmed from nostalgic memories of Woodbridge’s childhood eating his grandmother’s cake. The story goes that his grandfather would pour a small glass of wine and explain, “The vines live in layers of soil just like the layers in Grandma’s cake; each layer bringing a different flavor.” Woodbridge saw that metaphor extending to life in general, everything with layers and complexity. Since Hundered Acre costs upwards of $350 in high demand, he decided to create an affordable wine (that was more in keeping with his grandfather’s sensibilities), with these layered elements of flavor and texture. The idea was to make an everyday wine of quality and not mass production.   The wines are sourced from around the world: Shiraz from South Australia, Malbec from Argentina, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, Syrah from the Cote du Rhone in France and Cabernet from Napa Valley in California. These wines have themselves earned a large following, though are easily accessible from many retailers.  Read less

This wine was one of the best ever. It was a bit spicy, fruity and had a lasting taste of mocha chocolate . Deep intense flavor that filled your nose and mouth with a wanting for more. I will definitely stock my wine rack with more. It's truly a Layer Cake for a sweet tooth!

Wow! This is a very different Malbec. It is slightly sweet with very mild tannins. Purple in color with spice and chocolate, leather, and lots of dark fruit. Purchased at $12.49.

Unexpected jammy fruit bomb. Smooth enough to compete with much more costly wines. Great value and fun to drink.

I consistantly enjoy Layer Cake Malbec, it has the soothing taste that agrees with my wine palate. The dark fruit taste is deep, the chocolate overtones and the long smooth ending with just a subtle tannin risidual feeling on the inside of the mouth and gums. For my money, I purchase Layer Cake and I seem to find it at wonderful prices here at out Safeway stores. Washington being federally controlled has few liquor stores so I am conveniently limited to the grocery store wine sections. Lefty- The Great Pacific Northwest

Scent was a bit earthy with a little spice. Dry, with flavors of oak and olive. Tangy finish.
