Layer Cake Chardonnay 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes The nose is like walking through a blossoming Meyer lemon orchard, a spring stream running over wet cobblestones in the background, and a hint of lemon meringue pie baking inside the cottage nearby. Fresh and vibrant, the wine builds in body and texture as it sits in your mouth. Kaffir lime, guava, pineapple and a note of flint flow in first, then the light creamy texture of lemon curd fills in the flavor palette. The finish is clean and crisp, lingering enough to make you want another sipgo ahead, we'll make more next year, don't worry.

Layer Cake is a wine brand created by Jayson Woodbridge, winemaker of the cult California label Hundred Acre. The idea for the wine stemmed from nostalgic memories of Woodbridge’s childhood eating his grandmother’s cake. The story goes that his grandfather would pour a small glass of wine and explain, “The vines live in layers of soil just like the layers in Grandma’s cake; each layer bringing a different flavor.” Woodbridge saw that metaphor extending to life in general, everything with layers and complexity. Since Hundered Acre costs upwards of $350 in high demand, he decided to create an affordable wine (that was more in keeping with his grandfather’s sensibilities), with these layered elements of flavor and texture. The idea was to make an everyday wine of quality and not mass production.   The wines are sourced from around the world: Shiraz from South Australia, Malbec from Argentina, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, Syrah from the Cote du Rhone in France and Cabernet from Napa Valley in California. These wines have themselves earned a large following, though are easily accessible from many retailers.  Read less

Lime meets granny smith apple juice. A touch sour, but also very refreshing. This would make a great mixer with club soda...it would benefit from some fizz.
