Layer Cake California Cabernet 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes This wine offers generous aromas of ripe Bing cherries, blackberry, candied violets, cedar, and tobacco, plus hints of minerals and graphite. Sweet, densely packed and creamy in the mouth, but with firm, underlying structure that gives lift to the dark berry, chocolate, and coffee flavors. This is a very lush, soft, complex wine that coats the palate and spreads out on the long, lingering finish.

Layer Cake is a wine brand created by Jayson Woodbridge, winemaker of the cult California label Hundred Acre. The idea for the wine stemmed from nostalgic memories of Woodbridge’s childhood eating his grandmother’s cake. The story goes that his grandfather would pour a small glass of wine and explain, “The vines live in layers of soil just like the layers in Grandma’s cake; each layer bringing a different flavor.” Woodbridge saw that metaphor extending to life in general, everything with layers and complexity. Since Hundered Acre costs upwards of $350 in high demand, he decided to create an affordable wine (that was more in keeping with his grandfather’s sensibilities), with these layered elements of flavor and texture. The idea was to make an everyday wine of quality and not mass production.   The wines are sourced from around the world: Shiraz from South Australia, Malbec from Argentina, Primitivo from Puglia in Italy, Syrah from the Cote du Rhone in France and Cabernet from Napa Valley in California. These wines have themselves earned a large following, though are easily accessible from many retailers.  Read less

Creamy and oaky. Warms my cockles. Decent QPR. Would be killer at $10.

Being a fan of Layer Cake Malbec and also hard to find, I decided to try their Cabernet. Was equally pleased with this wine. Deep color, very fruity, cedar, chocolate, tobacco with solid but smooth tannins. Long lasting finish. A definite winner and I will purchase it again.

Decent Cab for the price. Light bodied and easy to drink. Not too much structure but a decent Cabernet to enjoy with friends.

Oak & butter on the nose and big fat jolly rancher on the tongue. Lots of tannin. Easy drinker. May not be popular with those who don't like dry reds.

Save $20 when you purchase the Case! The new vintage of Layer Cake Cabernet has hit the floor with a new appellation and price point. We're super excited to give this one a whirl. As many of you will recall, the last Layer Cake Cabernet was the 07 vintage, was about twice the price of the other Layer Cakes and had a Napa Valley appellation. This time around Jayson Woodbridge has sourced fruit from two distinctive vineyards from two distinctive CA appellations that combine to make a Cabernet that is in the distinctive Layer Cake tradition. Combine fruit from Alexander Valley and Paso Robles and what do you get? - 'generous aromas of ripe Bing cherries, blackberry, candied violets, cedar, and tobacco, plus hints of minerals and graphite.
