Lava Cap Syrah 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very peppery and a bit tarry on the nose with wild cherry, dried strawberry and steely mineral aromas. There’s so much white pepper here it makes you want to sneeze. Quite open on the palate and transparent, this has fruit that drifts to the red end of the spectrum, with hints of cranberry and raspberry framing the core of blueberry tinged fruit. The acidity is supportive and the tannins polished but firm, lending this a bit of welcomed tension in the mouth. Some bacon fat and a hint of tarragon herbs emerge on the backend before this floats away on a light, peppery, red fruited finish. A nice rendition of New World Syrah. 91pts

This is part of Apple Hill, El Dorado, beginning at Grace Patriot wines and covering Lava Cap, Crystal Basin, Jack Russell Brewing, Boa Vista and Madroña in the same area. We tasted this at Lava Cap. I do not understand what is going on but the rubber smell is back yet again! This was decently balanced with juicy notes of good spice and berries.
