Laughing Stock Vineyards Chardonnay 2008

Member Review by zufrieden:

Nice, inviting deep yellow color - a distinctive sign of maturity. There is an evasive scent of vegetable-oak on the nose that is not out of place with many similar wines from California. More stewed stone fruit and oak on the palate with medium finish. Nice candied element that lingers. Nicely made in the Cali (or perhaps Southern France) style.

Pursuing a passion can be daunting, particularly when it requires balancing established careers in the investment business with an overblown love of wine by launching a winery, regardless of the financial wisdom of this decision. As David often says, "This winery is our vow of poverty." But if life was all about being sensible, then great things in this world, such as fabulous wine, just wouldn't come to be. After numerous research sojourns to vineyards and wineries of Europe and the United States, we decided that BC's Okanagan Valley, and particularly the Naramata Bench, offered the very best locations for the production of ultra premium wines. Together, we purchased the vineyard property on Naramata Road in 2003 and have subsequently planted additional vines in Spring 2004 and built a gravity flow winery in 2005. David started as a true 'garagiste' winemaker in 2001 making two vintages of small batch, hand-crafted wines with fruit sourced from some of the best vineyards in Washington State. Augmented with various courses and workshops from UC Davis in California, David has apprenticed under some of the best wine-makers in the Okanagan Valley and is now leading our winery team. In 2006, David was named one of BC's top winemakers and his wine-making prowess is consistently resulting in award winning wines. For Cynthia, the transition from being an "MBA type, business consultant" to becoming a "vineyard manager" is a truly welcomed change. Viticulture science is not only intellectually stimulating, but the satisfaction of applying all of these learnings to the vineyard is highly gratifying. Read less

This wine was a challenge and, ultimately, a pleasure to review. The issue is that the winemaker was bold in the use of oak, aging the wine for 10 months on the lees in French oak – half new, half used. On the initial pass, the fruit and the oak flavours still seem a bit disjointed. It is nothing that three or four months of cellaring won’t resolve. This is a complex Burgundian-style wine. The aroma begins with a whiff of sweet creamed corn (typical in a young Chardonnay that has gone through malolactic fermentation). The aromas evolve to show citrus, ripe pineapple and oak notes. On the palate, there are flavours of tangerine and sweet butter, with a rich, creamy texture. The wine is not shy on ripeness, with a stated alcohol of 13.6%. All the elements are here for a wine that will develop further richness and complexity if you are patient. Unfortunately, only 140 cases were made. 90 points.
