Although by all accounts the vine has been rampant in these parts since at least Roman times, the earliest written mention that our archivist has discovered, citing a parcel of vines being cultivated at Haut-Brion dates back to only 1423. In the early days wines were known by the name of the parishes from whence they came. Later they became known as clarets. In the case of Haut-Brion, under the great stewardship of the Pontac family the wine's reputation was for years represented by the name of this enlightened and well respected family-- Pontac wine. Eventually as its renown grew, the name of the Estate came to replace that of its owners. The notion of a Great Growth was born! We find the first written mention of the wine in the Diaries of Samuel Pepys. While visiting the Royal Oak Tavern in London on April 10, 1663 Pepys wrote "There I drank a sort of French wine called Ho-Bryan (sic) which hath a good and most particular taste which I never before encountered....." A very austere start, soft and smooth, however, it built slowly to a beautiful finish. Tasted at the New York Wine Experience

Maybe I drank this too young? I just wasn't impressed.

Full bodied, long after taste that "echos". Has a complex texture and expandable palate.. Poultry and powerful nose, full and round with strawberry and cherry notes.. Hints of spice and "saltiness" with a finishing of marvelous desire for another gulp, not sip. To drink one of the Big Five, if I were you, I like to try another vintage. For this vintage, the finishing might be sexier shall the wine matures after 5-10 years from now. In Summary: Almost perfect, just the "finishing"

Chateau La Tour Haut Brion Pessac Leognan Full ruby-red. Inky black cherry and bitter chocolate aromas. Suave; strong acidity gives excellent flavor delineation. Bitter chocolate and black cherry are lifted by a floral element. Best on the long finish: impressive tannic structure.

Good medium ruby. Blueberry and pungent minerality on the nose. Dense, pure and high-pitched; impressive for its definition and grip but not at all lacking in flesh. Finishes with chewy, gripping tannins and excellent length.

Refined with supple ripe cassis on the palate silky tannins and bracing acidity Haut-Bailly's star is on the rise and here is a chance to see what all the fuss is about at a very good price. Perfect with roast lamb this wine from an excellent vintage for Ch. Haut-Bailly also goes well with game birds and hard cheese.

Wonderful aromas of dried flowers, currant, berries and mineral. Full-bodied, yet reserved and refined. Lovely texture, with a pure silk feel. Seamless and beautiful. Great length. Even better than from barrel. Best after 2012. 12,500 cases made. -JS Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2004 Haut Brion 750ml

The dark plum/ruby-hued 2004 Haut-Brion exhibits a noble, discrete, smoky bouquet revealing notions of plum liqueur, black currants, sweet cherries, and subtle earth. In addition to its aromatic complexity, this medium-bodied effort reveals classic e... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2004 Haut Brion 750ml
