Las Rocas Garnacha08 750m 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Bodegas San Alejandro is a co-operative with 1200 hectares of vineyard in Calatayud, 87 km southwest of Zaragoz in Aragon. The vineyards and long growing season in this area attracted French consultant Jean-Michel Lafage and his team (of Ch St Roch) and they were so impressed by the quality of the fruit coming into this co-op from its 350 growers, that they decided to develop their own brand, Las Rocas. The quality of their Garnacha is particularly high here and accounts for over 50% of their production. Bright, light straw in colour, with greenish tints. On the nose this wines shows intense aromas of white flowers and tropical fruits. Its excellent balance between alcohol and acidity makes it pleasant, elegant, smooth and fresh on the palate.

At the centre of its urban neighbourhood rises the church of San Pedro Apóstol made in the mudejar style, which it lies next to the exceptional communal Tower in the gothic style and built using cut-stone masonry. At the beginning of the 17th century, the mudejar-style Convent of the Reverendas Concepcionistas Franciscanas was built, where the remainders of San Alejandro currently remain in honour of whom the main town festivities are held from the 12th to the 16th of May. Dark slightly murky purple. Berry, but also alcoholic on the nose. Lots of fruit, blacberry, on the tip of the tongue. Not a heavyweight, that's for sure. I would say medium-bodied. Kind of bitter, viney on the back of the palate. US$10.99 at WIne Club.

A perfect wine for a meat dinner, made of garnacha grapes which are very unique to this area of the world. This wine is from the very small village Miedes y the region of Aragon in Spain. It is a D.O Calatayud. I am a lover of garnacha and Bodegas San Alejandro make some of the best wines, this one is one of their cheapest ones but a very nice strong berry flavour. If you like this one taste their Baltasar Gracián.

Intensives Kirschrot. In der Nase reife Frucht, feine Toastnoten, Kaffee. Wunderbare Fruchtkomponenten der Garnachatrauben. Am Gaumen füllig, fleischig, geschmackvolle, schön integrierte Tannine, körperreich. Ein langer, fruchtiger Abgang.

In the meantime, 2008 was a somewhat challenging vintage and, as a result, 60% of the juice meant for the old-vine cuvee went into the 2008 Las Rocas Garnacha. Purple colored, it delivers a smoky, spicy, black cherry perfume leading to a soft, easy-going, savory wine meant for drinking over the next 4 years. As usual, it is an excellent value. ** SOLD OUT **

Shows an intense cherry red color with captivating aromas of vibrant black raspberry. Hints of spice box reflect a judicious touch of oak. This wine is all about depth and succulent layers of flavor. It is round and full in the mouth, with a fruit-filled finish.

Tasting Notes:

A perennial favorite among wine writers for its value, the character of Las Rocas seems to be changing a bit with time; where once the fruit was aged mostly in used barrels and the stony dustiness of Calatayud was the hallmark, now new oak barrels offer vanilla and even dry toast notes. The wine is relatively ripe by the region’s classic standard, with rich cherry accompanied by raisins.
