What to Expect

Grenache is the main grape in many Rhone blends and most Cotes du Rhone and Chateaunuef-du-pape. It's a grape that yields soft, lightly colored yet full wines endowed with deep notes of strawberry and raspberry. While not prone to producing particularly rich or complex wines in France, Grenache is one of the world's most widely-planted grapes, producing unique expression where ever it is planted. It is particularly common in Spain as Garnacha, and Sardinia, as Canonnau,

Winemakers Notes

Bodegas San Alejandro is a co-operative with 1200 hectares of vineyard in Calatayud, 87 km southwest of Zaragoz in Aragon. The vineyards and long growing season in this area attracted French consultant Jean-Michel Lafage and his team (of Ch St Roch) and they were so impressed by the quality of the fruit coming into this co-op from its 350 growers, that they decided to develop their own brand, Las Rocas. The quality of their Garnacha is particularly high here and accounts for over 50% of their production. This 100% Garnacha has a good depth of ruby red colour with an attractive spicy strawberry nose. read more...

Reviews

Nose immediately says Spanish Garnacha. Pepper, berry and full. Color is dark ruby, slightly turning brick red now. First taste is loaded with cherries, white pepper, and lemon acidity. Great food wine and value. Old vine Garnacha at possibly its best for the money.

"Good red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of liqueur-like dark berries and black cherry, licorice and spicy oak. Smooth, ripe, fat and full, with an enticing dark cherry flavor. This is wonderfully lush and pliant for a red wine under $10. Finishes with big, mouthdusting tannins and lingering sweetness. Exceptional value." -90pts International Wine Cellar
