Larkmead Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2006
The 4,400-case cuvee of 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (96% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc) is brilliant. It would probably be hard to find a Cabernet Sauvignon of this quality with this production level, all estate fruit, and such impeccable viticulture and winemaking. This wine reminded me of a great vintage of Pontet Canet in Pauillac, Bordeaux. The deep creme de cassis flavors intermixed with charcoal and lead pencil shavings soar from the glass. Its full body, stunning ripeness, sweet tannin, and substantial flavor authority make for a brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next two decades.
This venerable producer has made a beauty: Himalayan blackberry hanging in cheesecloth in the jelly factory with a hint of menthol comes to mind on the nose. This wine retains just enough silky tannin to convince the drinker that wine - not fresh wild blackberry - is caressing the palate. The entry is generous, smooth, balanced; in a word, as perfect as you can get for a Cab under 100 dollars from California. Delicious, perfect for drinking now but capable of up to 5 more years in a cool cellar environment. Nicely done!
Classic in every way. One of the best I tasted in and over it’s price point. It was satisfying and full yet structured. If you are looking for the next $50 - $60 Cabernet that tastes like it costs much more, look no further. I couldn’t believe this was their entry level Cab
This is the best $50-$75 dollar cab I have ever tasted. Very elegant with perfectly integrated tannins, dark fruits, and a super long finish. The fruit is not overly fruit forward it is however very refined. Wonderful!!!
The structure of this cab is one of the best I've tasted at its price point--- easily standing up to similar cabs that cost $100+. I agree with rar8888 that the fruits are present, but well-rounded. This is a well composed wine that I'd be glad to enjoy again.
We were in Atlantic City this weekend and we decided to eat at Bobby Flay's. We ordered our steaks and also asked for a bottle of Joseph Phelps. The waiter recommended This Larkmead instead. We took his recommendation and couldn't have been more happy with it. The taste was superb! One of the best cabs I have ever experienced. Perfectly balanced, nice fruitiness, and was perfect with the ribeye I ate! I got home and immediately ordered more of this wine.

Composed of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (nearly 4,000 cases produced) is a great buy for a world-class Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It exhibits a dense purple color, notes of charcoal, creme de cassis, graphite, and forest floor, and a ripe, opulently fruity, rich, full-bodied style. Its endearing silkiness, multi-dimensions, and mature, sweet tannins suggest it has two decades of life ahead of it.
Good full red-ruby. Enticing aromas of currant, chocolate, graphite, violet, loam and spices. Lush, suave and sweet, with a firm edge of acidity giving a tactile quality to the currant and graphite flavors. Less tight in the middle than the Firebelle, but tannic for this cuvee, and built to age.
Good full ruby. Pungent aromas of raspberry, currant, graphite, dried herbs, violet and loam, along with a whiff of dark tobacco; smells like a Graves. Less giving on the palate than the nose suggests, with a firm edge of acidity keeping the flavors under wraps today. Finishes with youthfully strict tannins. Winemaker Smith notes that he has not added either water or acid to any of the Larkmead reds since the 2004 vintage.

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (100% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3,500 cases produced) is performing even better from bottle than it did from cask. It is a sexy, supple Cabernet offering a dense saturated purple color, and a big, full-bodied, heady bouquet of black fruits, melted licorice, and smoke. This fleshy, hedonistic Cabernet Sauvignon will have huge crowd appeal, and should fare well in blind tastings. Enjoy it over the next 10-15 years.
A delightfully rich and complex young Cabernet, with tiers of ripe currant, black cherry, plum and hints of mocha and chocolate, showing a touch of sweet fruit on the finish and finishing with ripe, firm tannins. Drink now through 2012.
Ripe, Complex and generous, with a plush texture and concentrated black cherry, black currant, licorice and spicy toasty oak tones. Richness lingers, along with herb notes and round, nicely integrated tannins. Drink now through 2007.
