Larkmead Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Bright ruby/purple. Intensely aromatic nose of sweet black cherry, dusty cocoa and a rich core of dark smoky fruits. Dark black fruits dominate the palate with cassis, blackberry and black raspberry. Typical Larkmead nuances of stony minerality, graphite and spice are supported by perfectly ripe, seductive tannins which glide across the palate creating a sense of seamless integration. A note of creamy mocha adds richness to round out the finish. Our favourite estate Cabernet to date, the new vintage comes from a growing season that featured a cool summer which increased aromatic complexity, followed by intense heat at harvest to fully mature and sweeten the Cabernet’s abundant tannins. The 2004 blend features the fruit intensity and textural elements of the hugely popular 2002 with the structure of the 1999. Approachable early due to the level of natural fruit sweetness, the wine should age well for a decade and beyond. Decant for an hour in its youth to experience the wine’s full range of flavors. This large-scaled wine will further concentrate for 5 years in bottle and hold for a decade or more.

Full disclosure: Tasted at the vineyard on a beautiful day tranquil day, sublime setting and a private tour of the facilities. With that said... Thick and juicy - full of flavors of plums and raisins and other sweet fruits. Starts out rather soft and smooth, but the tannins creep up slowly. A licorice and cocoa finish with some great minerality. From the winemaker - fennel, eucalyptus and cedar - yummy!

Jammy. Always more fruit than I expect when I open a bottle, yet beautifully structured. Little tannic reaction on the palate Among my top five favorites in my cellar. I wish I could refrain from drinking it now because I know that it will only get better as time passes. Fabulous with grilled tenderloin or on its own.

David Ramey has created an expressive, rich Cabernet from the Larkmead vineyard, considered by many to be Napa's answer to Pauillac. This wine is packed with crŠme de cassis flavors and velvet tannins.
