Large Format Estate Syrah-verna's 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Production: 20 bottles Released: 04.06.07 Alcohol: 15.2% Note: Special shipping rates apply. This is 100% Melville estate fruit from our ranch in Los Alamos and is composed of eight different clones (Estrella, Durell, Clone 1 Shiraz, Tablas 99, 174, 383, 420 and 877) that were picked over a 28 day period. Yields were 3.7 lbs./plant (3.2 tons/acre) in our tightly spaced vineyard. 85% of the grapes were gently de-stemmed, with 15% remaining as whole-clusters. Total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (a 7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks fermentation and 1+ week extended maceration). From the press, the wine was transferred directly into neutral barrel where it remained sur lie with no SO2 until May when it was gently pressure-racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August. Tasting Notes: This wine has a vibrant amethyst and dark red color coupled with brambly fruit nuances of black currants, red plum, blackberry and fig, countered by earthy components of rose, tobacco leaf, graphite and arugula. Spicy elements remind us of dried sage, pink peppercorns, oregano and Indian spices. There is an evocative balance between a feminine profile of purple flowers and fruit against rustic non-fruit elements of meat and earth that makes this wine intriguing and alluring. It finishes both with elegance and gumption creating a wine with weight and flavor.
