Laphroaig Triple Wood Single Malt Scotch NV

Winemaker's Notes:

Gold - Beverage Tasting Institute, 2013 Gold - San Francisco World Spirits Competition, 2013 The flavour profile of Laphroaig whiskies is highly influenced by its location. Nestled in a cove from which it gets its name (‘the beautiful hollow by the broad bay’ in Gaelic), it is in the direct path of strong salty sea winds from the Atlantic Ocean. The moisture in the air gets into the warehouse walls and casks, which gives the whisky a maritime taste profile. Laphroaig Triple Wood has enjoyed a triple maturation in 3 types of cask. The first maturation is in ex-Bourbon barrels. Then a selection of spirits from different barrels is made and those are transferred into small 19th Century style quarter casks for a second maturation. The final maturation is in specially selected, large European oak, Oloroso sherry casks. It is bottled at 48% ABV and is non-chill filtered for a depth of taste and texture. Colour: Bright gold. Nose: At 48%, straight from the bottle, the initial flavour is quite sweet with a gentle mixture of sweet raisins and creamy apricots with just a trace of the dry peat smoke at the back, the smoother nutty flavours combine all these flavours into one smooth, syrupy whole. Palate: With no water, a large initial burst of peat belies the slight lack on the nose but is gentled on the tongue by the creamier flavours of vanilla and fruit with just a suggestion of sherry sweetness. Finish: Mouth filling and extremely long but balanced by the sweet smooth caramel taste.

A triple maturation in 3 types of cask.First it is aged in ex-bourbon barrels, then in small 19th century style quarter casks. Then final maturation is in large European oak cask, resulting in the perfect marriage of peat, oak and subtle sherry sweetness.
