Langoa Barton 12x 2003

92 pts WS. A nice St. Julien bordeaux. Blackberry, licorice and oak, all nicely balanced. It does have chewy tannins, so should improve with some more time.
Cheap one from the WS Top 100 list.
old, obscure scoring method: (3/2/3/2.5) [5/14/10=29+/-5 out of 50?]

Tasted single blind at Southwold. Again, this is showing a lot of extraction and unresolved new oak on the nose with cassis, blackcurrant, liquorice and a touch of fig. Very ripe supple black fruits, lush and generous, exotic almost with a lithe, toasty finish. Very seductive, but then a wall of tannins hit the back palate, then honeyed tones lingering on the aftertaste. Magnificent - I would love to contrast this against the 2003. Drink 2015-2035.
Power and elegance merge effortlessly in this superb wine. Its pure black currant fruit is tightly coiled, supported by just the right amount of firm tannins. Great aging potential. A triumph.
This is the biggest, most powerful ever from Leacute;oville Barton. Amazingly rich and silky. Lots of chocolate and blackberry aromas, with hints of raspberries. Full-bodied, with silky and round tannins. Great concentration. Long, long finish. Best after 2012.
Right from the early days of tasting in spring 2001, this was gong to be one of the stars of the vintage. And a star it remains. There is big, ripe fruit, with solid, ageworthy tannins. It may not be as powerful as some of the blockbusters of the vintage, but it is certainly more opulent and less classical than Leacute;oville Barton can sometimes be.

Absolutely spectacular from bottle, but frightfully closed and backward, with massive power and structure, the saturated purple-colored 2000 Leoville Barton is one of the greatest wines ever made at this estate. The wine has smoky, earthy notes intermixed with graphite, camphor, damp earth, jammy cassis, cedar, and a hint of mushroom. Enormous, even monstrous in the mouth, with tremendous extraction, broodingly backward, dense flavors, and copious tannins, this should prove to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage and one of the most compelling Leoville Bartons ever made. However, anyone unable to defer gratification for at least a decade should steer clear of this behemoth. Anticipated maturity: 2015ndash;2040.
In 2003, Anthony Barton made his greatest wine ever from this second-growth St. Julien estate. Bartonandrsquo;s family purchased the estate in 1826; today, it encompasses just more than 111 acres of vineyards, comprising about 72 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Merlot and 8 percent Cabernet Franc. The wines, made at the Langoa Barton winery, are fermented in temperature-controlled wooden vats and aged for about 18 to 20 months in as much as 60 percent new French oak barrels.
