Lange Winery Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Member Review by pboss:

A nice Pinot Noir from Willamette. Has a great nose of cigar boxes (yes, really) and spice. The palate was very well balanced with some blackberry, earth tones, and leather. There were many subtleties with this wine, but overall it was a little thin and too delicate. Did not hold up well to the shrimp appetizer we had. Will repeat though.

Driven by a passion for Pinot Noir and a love of the land, Don and Wendy Lange founded their winery in the Dundee Hills of Oregon's northern Willamette Valley. The year 1987 marked the Lange’s first vintage and consisted of the three varietals they embrace today: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. The Langes' mission is to produce consistent, complex, balanced wines that express terroir and dedicated stewardship. Known for his even hand, Winemaker Don Lange crafts beautifully balanced wines from estate fruit, sustainably and organically farmed in the famed red Jory soil of the prestigious Dundee Hills appellation. To further supplement their 15,000 case production, the Langes purchase additional fruit from renowned vineyards in the surrounding area. Long-standing relationships with these talented growers have helped the winery establish a well-deserved reputation for consistency and complexity in the wines. In addition to Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, Don bottles at least six different Pinot Noirs, paying meticulous attention to each lot of wine. While guiding its journey through a careful barrel regime, he blends as he sees fit or bottles his favorites as single-vineyard offerings. Don is joined by his son Jesse in these endeavors; thus the Lange Estate legacy continues with Jesse's expert contributions in both the cellar and the vineyard. Read less

Leathery with some rocks and dark cherry fruit. Blackberry here, too. Incredibly smooth and juicy but with nice tension and mouthfeel. Very enjoyable to drink.

It's very approachable, delicious and doesn't have a pungent finsh. Extremely smooth and delectable. Highly recommended!

Our Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is an assemblage of all our North Willamette vineyard sites, delivering a true reflection of the finest viticultural practices and dedicated winemaking. In our true classique style, this wine is approachable and fruit-forward upon release. Tantalizing aromas of candied cherry, crushed raspberry, and cola play over a current of black licorice and refined tannins.

Lange produces a wide range of Pinots, including an estate bottling, a reserve bottling and various single- vineyard cuvées. This is the most basic and affordable, and in the stellar 2008 vintage it offers a lot to admire. Ripe red berry and black plum fruit with lively acidity and supple tannins. Aged 10 months in French oak. Don't miss it.
