Vintage Notes
Our well-established vineyards survived record snowfall during dormancy in December. Spring arrived a bit later this year, and we saw bud break at Lange Estate in mid-April. Bloom conditions were ideal -- warm, breezy, and no rain, and set the stage for large yields, which were eventually tempered by dropping fruit in the vineyard. Moving in to July, temperatures rose, peaking during a record-breaking heat wave late that month. In September, temperatures cooled, and rain events brought the possibility of botrytis. Another heat spike followed, however, which took care of precipitation and mold threat. Hang-time was crucial for some vineyards, as full flavors were anticipated. In all, vintners expect 2009 wines to be similar to 2006 -- lush and fruit-forward -- but with elegant structure and balance.
Vineyard Notes
A multi-vineyard blend from premier sites in the Northern Willamette Valley, including Yamhill Vineyards, Yamhill-Carlton AVA.
Tasting Notes
Lange Estate Winery was the fourth producer in the United States to work with Pinot Gris and winemaker, Don Lange, was the first to produce a barrel-fermented style. Neutral oak puncheons are used to lend weight and texture to the wine while maintaining remarkably balanced acidity. The nose displays hints of ripe melon, mandarin, jasmine blossom, and stone fruit minerality, while the palate reveals grapefruit, lychee, white peach, and fennel. With its round, rich mid-palate and long, clean finish, the Pinot Gris Reserve has become the flagship white wine from Lange and is consistenly among the top examples of this popular Oregon varietal.

Reviews for 2009 Vintage
Barrel fermented style. Racy citrus and floral notes combine with honey, lychee and a strong fig character throughout. Nice and complex on the palate.

Rating: "Very Good" - As reviewed by PinotFile (Rusty Gaffney) on 08/02/2010. "The aromatics are enticing, featuring scents of cut flowers, topical fruits and melons. Moderately rich on the palate with flavors of peaches and citrus zest with a mildly creamy mouth feel and a clean finish. A benchmark for Oregon Pinot Gris and a wine to cozy up to with roasted chicken or grilled salmon. Very good." - PInotFile (Rusty Gaffney)
