Lange Estate Winery Pinot Noir "Dundee Hills Estate" 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Woodsy, autumnal and lightly chalky on the nose with hints of woodsmoke, hung game and herbs wrapping a core of raspberry and black raspberry fruit. This is fairly zesty with acidity on entry, then the fruit quickly fills out on the palate with lightly gamy edges and handfuls of earthy herb mixed in with a core of pure and lively raspberry and sour cherry fruit. This is ripe yet dry and a bit nervy with a long, apricot-laced raspberry coulis finish that ends with a pop of spice on the finale. Lovely complexity and balance. 91pts

Driven by a passion for Pinot Noir and a love of the land, Don and Wendy Lange founded their winery in the Dundee Hills of Oregon's northern Willamette Valley. The year 1987 marked the Lange’s first vintage and consisted of the three varietals they embrace today: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. The Langes' mission is to produce consistent, complex, balanced wines that express terroir and dedicated stewardship. Known for his even hand, Winemaker Don Lange crafts beautifully balanced wines from estate fruit, sustainably and organically farmed in the famed red Jory soil of the prestigious Dundee Hills appellation. To further supplement their 15,000 case production, the Langes purchase additional fruit from renowned vineyards in the surrounding area. Long-standing relationships with these talented growers have helped the winery establish a well-deserved reputation for consistency and complexity in the wines. In addition to Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, Don bottles at least six different Pinot Noirs, paying meticulous attention to each lot of wine. While guiding its journey through a careful barrel regime, he blends as he sees fit or bottles his favorites as single-vineyard offerings. Don is joined by his son Jesse in these endeavors; thus the Lange Estate legacy continues with Jesse's expert contributions in both the cellar and the vineyard. Read less

A hint of nutty smokiness greets the nose followed by handful of dirty, freshly dug herbs. This smells powerful and savory with a slightly roasted base note of strawberries with a hint of pomegranate seed and orange pith. This enters the mouth with deceptive focus and then slowly unfurls across the palate with vibrant layers of mineral, wild blueberry, wild strawberry and slightly minty dried herb flavors. There's perfectly integrated acidity here along with a base of slightly angular tannins that work as the perfect counterpoint to the sweet impression of fruit this delivers on the palate. On the back end, the wine regains focus, bringing back the herbal elements, bay leaf and sage from the nose. The finish whipsaws back to a remarkably focused presentation with taut red berry fruit that shows a refreshing hint of astringency and austere, mineral-laden length. 92pts

Elegant and balanced. Great food wine and kept evolving well into day 3. Lots of red fruit start to finish.

This wine took about 40 to 50 minutes to really open up to where the bouquet changed. Got vanilla, earth, strawberry...the more it was able to breathe, the more I loved this wine. Can't wait to get home and finish of the bottle tonight.
