Sonoma, CaliforniaLandmark Overlook Chardonnay is a special white wine gem from Sonoma County that brings back fond memories of many pleasurable visits to the winery. Its setting is splendid, its wines seducing and its bocce court relaxing after a long day of wine tasting in Sonoma! Damaris Deere Ford, great-great-granddaughter of John Deere, relocated Landmark Vineyards from Windsor to a spectacular piece of land at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain in the Sonoma Valley. Damaris believed that Landmark could be a small jewel of a winery and built a Spanish mission style winery equipped with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment. Damaris convinced her son, Michael Deere Colhoun, and his wife Mary to move from the east coast and join her as partners in the winery. In 1993, they hired world-renowned consulting enologist Helen Turley to work with winemaker Eric Stern. This collaboration has led to some excellent winemaking. This 2011 vintage received an excellent rating of 88 points from Tanzer. The 2011 Overlook Chardonnay is comprised of 21 of the finest Chardonnay vineyards in Sonoma County, including Charlie Heintz's vineyard in the Sonoma Coast and The Sangiacomo Family's Green Acres Hill Vineyard in Carneros. All the wines in the Overlook bottling are barrel fermented using indigenous yeasts and undergo full malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged sur lie for 10 months in Burgundian oak barrels and racked to tanks for blending. On the nose, the wine has notes of brioche, preserved lemon, vanilla, and white peach. This unfiltered medium weight Chardonnay features flavors of citrus, sweet oat straw, grilled nectarine, and white chocolate followed by nutmeg spice and a hint of oak toast.Enjoy Landmark Overlook Chardonnay as a very food-friendly wine. Its acidity will pair well with seafoods and shellfish, and complement pastas with cream sauces, as well as roast chicken and pork roast with fruit.
The wine exhibits a golden honey hue with pure Granny Smith apple aromas along with distinctive notes of lime blossom and nutmeg. The mouthfeel is rich and round and unfolds to reveal shortbread and pineapple flavors that linger.
Landmark's 2011 Chardonnay Overlook is a solid value in California Chardonnay. It offers good definition and balance to match a soft, approachable personality well-suited for near-term drinking. Lemon oil, white peaches, butter, earthiness and a dash of tropical fruit inform an expressive finish that is pure California. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2015.
Our signature wine, the Overlook Chardonnay, has appeared on The Wine Spectator Top 100 list 7 times since 1997.
