What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

The aromas of toasted almonds, caramel, and coconut are followed by crisp green apple and lemon rind flavors that convey certain minerality. The acidity will pair well with seafoods and shellfish, and complement pastas with cream sauces, as well as roast chicken and pork roast with fruit.

Wine Advocate ReviewA reliable winery with a realistic pricing policy, one of Californias finest Chardonnays for the money is Landmarks Chardonnay Overlook. The 2005 (74% Sonoma, 16% Santa Barbara, and 10% Monterey fruit) exhibits a light green/straw color as well as attractive aromas of honeyed citrus, tropical fruits, and spices. Excellent acidity, a lovely texture and mouthfeel, and medium body suggest this complex Chardonnay will drink well for several years. It represents a hypothetical blend of a classic white Burgundy and a California Chardonnay.

The 20 plus separate vineyards that comprise this year's Overlook include such distinguished growersas Sangaciomo, Bien Nacido, Martinelli, Lorenzo and Heintz. All the wine in the Overlook bottling isbarrel fermented using indigenous yeasts and undergoes full malolactic fermentation. The wine is agedsur lie for ten months in Burgundian barrels and racked to tanks for blending. I love the rich taste of Landmark's Overlook, and for the price tag, I think it is worth every penny. It is rich without being too forward, good with shellfish and easy to enjoy with dinner, or alone. Overlook is Landmark's "bargain" brand, and I think is is as delicious (albeit a bit different) as their other bigger-prcied chards.
