Lancaster Estate Red Bordeaux Blend Alexander Valley 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Founded in 1995, the family-owned Lancaster Estate produces highly acclaimed wines under their Lancaster Estate and Roth Estate labels. The estate is situated on 53 hillside acres at the southern tip of Alexander Valley, near the confluence of the Knights Valley and Chalk Hill appellations. 24 vineyard blocks are sub-divided into 27 distinct sub-blocks planted exclusively to the classic Bordeaux varieties. The warm climate, depleted soils, and rugged hillsides are uniquely suited to these varieties. The vineyards are sustainably farmed. Cover crops are planted to improve drainage, replenish soil nutrients and reduce erosion. Each vineyard block is separated by varietal during harvest, defining each section by maturity and richness of character. The grapes are hand-picked, hand-sorted, and destemmed before fermentation. The must is cold soaked in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks for several days prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts which enhance the wines expression. Extended maceration encourages greater extraction of flavors and structural development. The finished wines are separated by attribute and varietal and then staged for blending and barrel aging. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 18-24 months in up to 8 different types of French oak at varying levels of toast, in order to develop balance and complexity. Following aging, the wines are bottled unfiltered. The winery was completed in 2001 with the excavation of more than 9,000 square feet of caves. Carved deep into the heart of No Name Hill, cellar operations and aging take place under naturally regulated temperatures and humidity. Jesse Katz, most recently of Screaming Eagle, is the winemaker at Lancaster and Roth Estates. He credits his winemaking philosophy and style to the influence of his mentors winemakers Andy Erickson, Paul Hobbs, and Robert Foley. Jesses production team includes consulting winemaker David Ramey, assistant winemaker David Drake and vineyard consultant, Phil Freese.

Lancaster Estate remains true to the founding vision of Proprietor Ted Simpkins. We are a family owned winery, dedicated to crafting wines that are Estate grown, bottled, and produced. In 1995, we purchased the former Maacama Creek Winery and its surrounding vineyard and gave the Estate our family name, “Lancaster.” We were attracted to the site’s abundant hillsides, knowing that their diverse elevations, aspects and slopes would provide a wide range of micro-climates from which we could produce wines of intensity and concentrated varietal character. We craft Estate grown, bottled and produced wines that honor and reflect their origins. Our commitment to cultivating our land’s expression through an integrated approach to winegrowing ensures that our wines consistently retain a definitive richness of character. As a result, we produce wines which are singularly identifiable as Lancaster Estate. The Estate is located at the southernmost tip of Alexander Valley, and includes 53 hillside acres of vineyard surrounding the winery. Situated near the confluence of the Knights Valley and Chalk Hill appellations, this location offers a great diversity of soils and micro-climates and the optimum growing conditions for Bordeaux varieties. Our Estate is uniquely blessed with warm days and cool nights, and a longer growing season than other Cabernet-driven appellations. As a result, our wines express their rich, ripe flavors with bright vibrancy and balance. The property consists of 24 vineyard blocks that are sub-divided into 27 distinct sub-blocks. The vineyard is planted exclusively to the classic Bordeaux varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Tasting Room Tastings and Private Tour and Tastings are available, Monday - Saturday by appointment, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. *Beginning Sunday, April 18, we will be open every day through November. We recommend advance notice as space is very limited. Please note, we cannot accommodate groups larger than 6 people without prior notice. Read less
