Lancaster Estate Red Bordeaux Blend Alexander Valley 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Enthusiast Review Rated 92 A very fine Cabernet. Not quite in the league of the '04 and '05, but rich and complex, a wine to drink now and over the next few years. Shows sweet tannins and accessible flavors of wild blackberries, currants, herbs and smoky cedar. Wine Tasting Notes Estate grown, produced and bottled, our Cabernet Sauvignon has lush ripeness, with deep black cherry and plum characters, accented by lavender and spice. Supportive tannins provide structure for the rich fruit, and layers of complexity carry over the long finish. Aged 22 months in French oak barrels, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered, to retain purity of expression.

Lancaster Estate remains true to the founding vision of Proprietor Ted Simpkins. We are a family owned winery, dedicated to crafting wines that are Estate grown, bottled, and produced. In 1995, we purchased the former Maacama Creek Winery and its surrounding vineyard and gave the Estate our family name, “Lancaster.” We were attracted to the site’s abundant hillsides, knowing that their diverse elevations, aspects and slopes would provide a wide range of micro-climates from which we could produce wines of intensity and concentrated varietal character. We craft Estate grown, bottled and produced wines that honor and reflect their origins. Our commitment to cultivating our land’s expression through an integrated approach to winegrowing ensures that our wines consistently retain a definitive richness of character. As a result, we produce wines which are singularly identifiable as Lancaster Estate. The Estate is located at the southernmost tip of Alexander Valley, and includes 53 hillside acres of vineyard surrounding the winery. Situated near the confluence of the Knights Valley and Chalk Hill appellations, this location offers a great diversity of soils and micro-climates and the optimum growing conditions for Bordeaux varieties. Our Estate is uniquely blessed with warm days and cool nights, and a longer growing season than other Cabernet-driven appellations. As a result, our wines express their rich, ripe flavors with bright vibrancy and balance. The property consists of 24 vineyard blocks that are sub-divided into 27 distinct sub-blocks. The vineyard is planted exclusively to the classic Bordeaux varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Tasting Room Tastings and Private Tour and Tastings are available, Monday - Saturday by appointment, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. *Beginning Sunday, April 18, we will be open every day through November. We recommend advance notice as space is very limited. Please note, we cannot accommodate groups larger than 6 people without prior notice. Read less

Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the August 2010 issue. Bigger, riper and more fully stuffed than Lancaster's Estate Cabernet, this very expressive working is similarly longer on oak, and its generous themes of cassis are colored by plenty of sweet, slightly toasty spice. Well-structured and quite rich on the palate, it picks up a scant note of burnt coffee beans at the very end, and its pushy, somewhat toothpicky astringency needs to be tempered by a several more years in the bottle.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

Well-defined Cabernet currants are teamed up with a nice bit of briary spice and top notes of vanilla in the deep and moderately intense nose of this immediately likeable wine, and its very solid, clean-as-can-be flavors are wholly consonant with the nose. It is supple and smooth with a trim bit of tannin, and it shows fine potential for a few years of growth.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate includes small quantities of Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Revealing a deep ruby/purple color, a big, intense, masculine mouthfeel, and plenty of power and tannin, it needs time to round into an accessible win... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
