Lancaster Estate Red Bordeaux Blend Alexander Valley 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2002 vintage was grown, crafted and bottled exclusively at Lancaster Estate. Aromas of black cherries, lavender, and vanilla bean lead the way to lushly textured layers of black fruit that carry over the long, polished finish. Gentle cultivation in vineyard and winery allowed the distinctive personality of our Estate to shine through; 22 months of aging in tight-grained French oak barrels (60% new) enhanced the wine’s complexity.

Lancaster Estate remains true to the founding vision of Proprietor Ted Simpkins. We are a family owned winery, dedicated to crafting wines that are Estate grown, bottled, and produced. In 1995, we purchased the former Maacama Creek Winery and its surrounding vineyard and gave the Estate our family name, “Lancaster.” We were attracted to the site’s abundant hillsides, knowing that their diverse elevations, aspects and slopes would provide a wide range of micro-climates from which we could produce wines of intensity and concentrated varietal character. We craft Estate grown, bottled and produced wines that honor and reflect their origins. Our commitment to cultivating our land’s expression through an integrated approach to winegrowing ensures that our wines consistently retain a definitive richness of character. As a result, we produce wines which are singularly identifiable as Lancaster Estate. The Estate is located at the southernmost tip of Alexander Valley, and includes 53 hillside acres of vineyard surrounding the winery. Situated near the confluence of the Knights Valley and Chalk Hill appellations, this location offers a great diversity of soils and micro-climates and the optimum growing conditions for Bordeaux varieties. Our Estate is uniquely blessed with warm days and cool nights, and a longer growing season than other Cabernet-driven appellations. As a result, our wines express their rich, ripe flavors with bright vibrancy and balance. The property consists of 24 vineyard blocks that are sub-divided into 27 distinct sub-blocks. The vineyard is planted exclusively to the classic Bordeaux varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Tasting Room Tastings and Private Tour and Tastings are available, Monday - Saturday by appointment, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. *Beginning Sunday, April 18, we will be open every day through November. We recommend advance notice as space is very limited. Please note, we cannot accommodate groups larger than 6 people without prior notice. Read less

I could not wait to taste this wine! The nose is a crazy bouquet of vanilla, licorice, and... BBQ sauce? The taste is sweet pomegranate, with a nice structure and lighter body. This wine will go with everything! Its like a crisp oxford shirt, always in style and always complimentary!

The one thing that I first detected about this wine was the vanilla component on the nose. Some nice sweet fruit rolled in deep but not as deep as the Good 'N Plenty (remember that candy when you were a kid? Or last week even?) which bombarded the rest of the aroma... the more time went by, the more Good 'N Plenty/licorice was evident. The taste was a totally different beast altogether, besides the aforementioned qualities I also detected some cheese/saltiness in this wine. I love the shiny crystals bouncing around in this wine as well.

Have you ever had All Sorts? Black licorice candies with coconut? My boyfriend is Canadian (I think that's why he likes them - because I'm not Canadian and I'm also not a big fan of them) and All Sorts are one of his favorites. This wine is very reminiscent of that for me. It's a beautiful color - like a rare (Canadian?) bird. It smells of blueberry pie and black licorice All Sorts. Though it's a a bit cottony on my tongue I find it to be quite a conundrum, because it tastes pretty much like it smells, only this time, I like it. Blueberry juice and All Sorts. . . hmm, who knew. I find it to be a bit of a chameleon - like me. Maybe that's what I really like about it.
