Lancaster Estate remains true to the founding vision of Proprietor Ted Simpkins. We are a family owned winery, dedicated to crafting wines that are Estate grown, bottled, and produced. In 1995, we purchased the former Maacama Creek Winery and its surrounding vineyard and gave the Estate our family name, “Lancaster.” We were attracted to the site’s abundant hillsides, knowing that their diverse elevations, aspects and slopes would provide a wide range of micro-climates from which we could produce wines of intensity and concentrated varietal character. We craft Estate grown, bottled and produced wines that honor and reflect their origins. Our commitment to cultivating our land’s expression through an integrated approach to winegrowing ensures that our wines consistently retain a definitive richness of character. As a result, we produce wines which are singularly identifiable as Lancaster Estate. The Estate is located at the southernmost tip of Alexander Valley, and includes 53 hillside acres of vineyard surrounding the winery. Situated near the confluence of the Knights Valley and Chalk Hill appellations, this location offers a great diversity of soils and micro-climates and the optimum growing conditions for Bordeaux varieties. Our Estate is uniquely blessed with warm days and cool nights, and a longer growing season than other Cabernet-driven appellations. As a result, our wines express their rich, ripe flavors with bright vibrancy and balance. The property consists of 24 vineyard blocks that are sub-divided into 27 distinct sub-blocks. The vineyard is planted exclusively to the classic Bordeaux varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Tasting Room Tastings and Private Tour and Tastings are available, Monday - Saturday by appointment, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. *Beginning Sunday, April 18, we will be open every day through November. We recommend advance notice as space is very limited. Please note, we cannot accommodate groups larger than 6 people without prior notice. Read less

Rich and smooth. A hint of mushroom makes the wine slightly earthy.

I must qualify this review with the fact that I work for the winery, however, having spent a good 10 years in the industry working for other wineries, I have had the opportunty to taste Lancaster Estate 2004 blind against some of the big dogs - Lokoya, Verite', Harlan Estate, Opus One, Rudd, to name a few. Out of a flight of 12 wines, the 2004 placed shockingly high - at #3. I say "shockingly" because I honestly did not believe an Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon could hold its weight against most top tiered, Napa Valley Cabs. This is the first vintage from Jennifer Higgins, with Dave Ramey consulting. It's a big, dense, full-bodied wine that will catch the interest of serious Cabernet lovers. It has mine! Thank goodness I have such easy access.

Lancaster makes an outstanding estate grown blend, and the 2004 was one of the best vintages to date. I love the vanilla that comes through from the french oak. The 2001 Lancaster estate is even better, but getting difficult to find.

Light red in appearance almost ruby in color. Hints of caramel, vanilla, and smoke on the nose. Delicious fruit flavors from plum up front to a subtle currant towards the end. Very well balanced and tasting excellent right now (10/09)

Rating: 88/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the August 2010 issue. If not the most "driven" wine on the table, this wine more than makes up for its slight shortfall in energy with a good dose of ripe black cherry fruit and a layer of oaky richness. It is full on the palate without getting heavy but is a bit weighed down by youthful tannin. Give it three to five years in the cellar to find a softer, rounder approach.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

A massive wine that absolutely demands time in the cellar, Lancaster's '05 is nearly all Cabernet, with tiny amounts of the other four Bordeaux varieties. It stuns with the power and authenticity of its hilly Cabernet origins, offering vast black currant, orange rind, anise and smoky oak flavors that implode on the palate. But the tannins are hard. It should blossom and fully come into its own after 2010. - S.H. Slightly superior is the outstanding 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, which offers up scents of fruitcake, soil undertones, forest floor, and copious quantities of black cherries and black currants as well as soft tannins in its dense, medium to full-bodied personality. It is ideal for drinking over the next decade. Smoky, with charred oak wrapped around a tight core of dried currant, anise, sage and tar, giving this a complex range of flavors. Full-bodied, this is supple midpalate, firming up on the finish. Drink now through 2015. 4,100 cases ma...

Supportive tannins provide structure for the rich fruit, and layers of complexity carry over the long finish. Aged 22 months in French oak barrels, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered, to retain purity of expression.
