Lancaster Alexander Valley(2002)

Our 2002 vintage was grown, crafted and bottled exclusively at Lancaster Estate. Aromas of black cherries, lavender, and vanilla bean lead the way to lushly textured layers of black fruit that carry over the long, polished finish. Gentle cultivation in vineyard and winery allowed the distinctive personality of our Estate to shine through; 22 months of aging in tight-grained French oak barrels (60% new) enhanced the wine’s complexity.

I could not wait to taste this wine! The nose is a crazy bouquet of vanilla, licorice, and... BBQ sauce? The taste is sweet pomegranate, with a nice structure and lighter body. This wine will go with everything! Its like a crisp oxford shirt, always in style and always complimentary!

Have you ever had All Sorts? Black licorice candies with coconut? My boyfriend is Canadian (I think that's why he likes them - because I'm not Canadian and I'm also not a big fan of them) and All Sorts are one of his favorites. This wine is very reminiscent of that for me. It's a beautiful color - like a rare (Canadian?) bird. It smells of blueberry pie and black licorice All Sorts. Though it's a a bit cottony on my tongue I find it to be quite a conundrum, because it tastes pretty much like it smells, only this time, I like it. Blueberry juice and All Sorts. . . hmm, who knew. The one thing that I first detected about this wine was the vanilla component on the nose. Some nice sweet fruit rolled in deep but not as deep as the Good 'N Plenty (remember that candy when you were a kid? Or last week even?) which bombarded the rest of the aroma... the more time went by, the more Good 'N Plenty/licorice was evident. The taste was a totally different beast altogether, besides the aforementioned qualities I also detected some cheese/saltiness in this wine. I love the shiny crystals bouncing around in this wine as well.
