Lamoreaux Landing Riesling Seneca Lake Dry 2009

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars is on the eastern slopes of Seneca Lake in Lodi, New York, an excellent location for growing Riesling grapes. This resplendent yet restrained wine has fruit balanced by crisp acidity. It would be delightful with poached sole.

Mark Wagner founded Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars and has consistently produced award-winnning wines with his own grapes since the 1990 vintage. Mark's family has been in the Seneca Lake grape business since the time of his great grandfather, and since the 1940s has produced vitis labrusca and French-American hybrid grapes for sale to big wine producers like Taylor and Widmer. As the giants began to stumble and estate wineries emerged in the wake of the Farm Winery Act of 1976, Mark took over the family business in 1978 and shifted the emphasis of the family farm to cultivating premium vitis vinifera grapes to supply the budding new wineries. Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars was the logical culmination of generations of grape-growing knowledge and decades of Mark's viticultural experience. The soaring Greek Revival building, which was designed by Ithacan native Bruce Corson, opened on August 30, 1992, and offers visitors unparalleled views of more than 25 miles of water on Seneca Lake. Lamoreaux Landing is aptly named after a 19th century steamboat landing on Seneca Lake, and the pilings from this dock can still be seen below the vineyards down on the lake. However, this connection to the deep waters of Seneca Lake extends way beyond a geographical namesake or signature view. In the winter months, radiant heat from the lake insulates nearby vineyards, protecting the vines even on the coldest days when the air temperature in the region drops below zero degrees Farenheit, which is cold enough to kill delicate European vines like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. The original vineyards are planted on lands recognized as far back as the 1800s as ideal for grape cultivation. Superior soil content, gently sloping hills, unusual prevailing wind patterns, ample sunlight, and proximity to the deep waters of Seneca Lake are all important ingredients that contribute to the production of Lamoreaux Landing's premium estate-bottled wines. It makes me incredibly happy to find a dry Riesling of this quality, at this price - and best of all, it's from New York! Aromas of peach, candied orange, and green apple lead the way, supported by an herbaceous undertone. The refreshing acidity holds everything together on the palate, as the wine finishes with touches of minerals and nutmeg. Lamoreaux Landing is quickly becoming one of my favorite wineries in the Finger Lakes - from their single-vineyard Rieslings to their Cabernet Francs to their dessert wines, there is an emphasis on terroir which promises an even greater future for the region.

An ethereal riesling from estate vineyards on Seneca Lake, this 2008 has aromas of lemon and passionfruit. Its flavors are leesy and firm, with a mineral texture like fine sand; the finish strays into lemon curd and other, deeper citrus elements, like Mandarin orange. A phenomenal value, and an ideal pairing for smoked trout.

This has a leafy scent of parsley to go along with notes of green apple and grilled peach. Its flavors fall toward leaner peach notes, with a fresh acidity and minerality that suggest a lively pairing with lake trout.

Lively and well-knit, this refreshing white offers bright lime, mineral and almond flavors on a firm frame. It's fruity but dry; the finish is clean and lingers nicely. Drink now.

Generous aromas of mango and lime give way to a more austere palate and steely acidity. It's clean and refreshing.
